[Pro] how do i NOT have page publish

Hi,

I have a page… Hoffkids.com/forum that I do not want to have publish each time and I do not want it to show when someone searches in google. I no longer use the page but not ready to delete it. I want it in Freeway but NOT on the internet.

How do I handle this without deleting the entire page from Freeway?

Thanks,

Barry

I have to do this regularly for an annual conference on a client’s website and I simply remove the link from the navigation and reconnect when it’s time to publish the updated page again.

Thanks Elizabeth.

my problem is not as much people not getting to it, I can just disconnect, but when I google search my main page, the main page comes up and underneath it are 6 subpages. 1 of the subpages is this page that I do not want to show and which I disconnected and I want it to not show up here.

ANy ideas how to get it really “gone?”

Thanks!

Barry

hmmm, not sure what you can do about this Barry, one of the wonderfully helpful here could most likely help you. I just did a check on the website I look after and the conference page doesn’t show in those six Google subpages.

I couldn’t really say. Earlier this year it was only visible for a couple of months and it was not a hugely visited page as they found people preferred to receive the info on the conference through their magazine and paper newsletters and didn’t use the online registration much either. Now it is visible again for next year’s conference, without online registration, so I guess time will tell. Personally I prefer online registrations and everything digital, but they have to do what their membership prefers.

i have a site like this too. did not find the right way to not publish, so I made a dublicate of the site completely. saved that with the other ( original version) and deleted the pages i did not want published.
removed the sitemap in that new folder and re-publised what was than new.
It is the exact same site, just without the pages you don’t want, while you still have your documents in tact.
I did not know what else to do. perhaps a sollution for you?

thanks- that seems like so much to do for 1 page. I thought there was once a PUBLISH option for the page. Maybe this was just for the graphic or html box.

there has to be an easier way.

Individual items can be set to not publish but not complete pages.

I suggested a workround to another FW user quite recently.

Create a sub folder in your FW doc with an obscure name ie vgyuwiargdguy

Now drag pages you dont want found into that folder.

When you upload your site go into your hosting Cpanel and use the feature ‘Password Protect Directories’ to give the folder a user/pass combo.

This will keep unwanted visitors out (and Google)

Dave, what about… just start a new freeway doc, copy the page I do not want anymore to this new FW doc, then delete it out of the working FW doc. and upload.

If I ever need it, I can copy and paste it from the non working FW doc?

Or you can use Page>Make Master and then delete the original

then that would rid all traces of that page until used again??

that seemed to work the easiest- thanks!

Dave and All,

Here is something interesting and even more the reason why FW needs a way to NOT publish a page.

I have a page off my main site called practice. This page is where I try things and test things to see how they may look and act etc. There is nothing in my main site connected to this page and no one would know about it… EXCEPT…

I just googled my main site and under it were 6 pages listed and guess what… one was called PRACTICE!!! it was my practice site that no one should see.

WOW!

You should be adding some code to these types of page to tell search bots to stay out.

<meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow,noarchive"/>

Another reason to use the first method I outlined - create a Password Protected Directory

The bots cant get in there!

There is so much to learn and so little time - and they keep adding stuff!

Page>Meta Tags - create a new one and add robots into the Name field and noindex, nofollow, noarchive into the Content field.

Everything can found with Google - unless you dont want it to be.
