it doesn’t exist in your project. It is a file(s) that live on your server space.

FTP into your server and look in the root of your site (you will probably have to enable viewing invisible files to find it/them) but it may be that you will need to speak to your Hosting provider about what you can/cannot do using htaccess.

FWIW on my hosting provider (FatCow), there is an area in the control panel/additional tools for the .htaccess Editor.

I only see .htaccess files in my protected directories (these only contain confidential data files which can be downloaded using a password) and not where my hmtl files are lockated. I also checked the control panel panel of my hosting provider but there are also no tools to edit .htaccess files. So how can i add expiration dates settings to my website files ?

You will need to create your own htaccess file for your root - but be aware that you really should speak to your hosting provider and ask them if there are defaults that can be altered because you may not be able/allowed to change things in your own htaccess file.

An htaccess file can be created with any plain text editing software - something like TextWrangler would be my choice.

Create the file locally as htaccess and then upload it to your server space before changing the file name to include the leading . (period) ie .htaccess

My provider does not work with .htaccess files. However he can put an expiration time on my whole domein. So they did it and put it on 1 week which seems the lower limit Google accepts. Thanks for all you advice. Great forum
