[Pro] html problem

Hi one and all,
having a problem with html on a site I am working on.

It has white type on a black background, up until now this has been working fine. My client emails me content in a word document I cut and paste into html and change the font and colour to white.

It has now developed a problem, it all looks correct on Freeway but when I preview or upload to the browser the type disappears, I assume it doesn’t change to white as a couple of times some paragraphs work OK and are white others disappear.

What is going on, how can I correct it ?

I tried getting him to send it in rich text, text edit, but the problem is persisting. Need help !!

Cheers,
Neil

it is now not allowing me to upload as white even if I manually type the text in, very odd…

I don’t use Word files directly - they often contain invisible formatting
which creates many problems. Often I convert them to a text format that
strips out any hidden formats.

You may be able to do this in FWP by selecting all the text then under the
Style menu choose Remove Styling. This may clean it up for you, though you
will have to reapply the FWP styles to it.

Be advised to make any temporary styles permanent before doing this, as
they disappear when unapplied.

Personally I copy all text out of word files into a plain text editor like TextWrangler - this strips out any/all invisible formatting.

Then recopy/paste into FW.

There is also the WordZapper action from Tim Plumb http://www.freewayactions.com/product.php?id=029

Thanks for your help guys, I have tried the plain text editor route, but this was only partially successful. The middle paragraph of 3 still wouldn’t upload as white.

I’ll try stripping out the styling as Ernie suggests. How do I make the style permanent after applying it ?

Thanks again,

Neil

Styles are permanent until they are either removed by you, or countermanded
by you. Up to now we who are giving you advice are guessing, but a link to
a published page will show us concretely what is wrong and help us better
advise you. Can you provide us a look at the issue?

If you make a temporary style (by using the Inspector to change a font, or color, at a local level) then you will see a new style appear in the Styles palette (named .style42 or similar). If the name of that style is not shown in bold, then it is a temporary style. It will only exist as long as it is used somewhere on a page in your site, and it will only be published into the page(s) where it is actually used.

If you check the Permanent checkbox in the Edit Style dialog, you will see the name of the style appear in bold in the Styles list. This style will still only be published into the pages where it is used (or not at all) but the style itself will survive non-use within the design environment, so you can change your mind and apply it again later, even if you remove all instances of it from your current design.

There is a third sort of style that I refer to as a Tag-only style. These are created rather deliberately, by removing the content of the Name field in the Edit Style dialog, and placing the entire CSS selector within the Tag field of that dialog. This offers a sort of “unofficial” way to create the types of selectors and styles that a hand-coder might employ. These styles are NEVER applied directly, they are just written so that they apply where they are needed, by dint of making the selector something which will apply to the elements you want to alter. Examples include the ‘body’ style, or the ‘h1’ style – changes made here are picked up by all elements that they apply to. And Freeway always publishes these styles in every page of the entire site, since there’s no way to tell where they have been applied.

hi Walter and all, thanks very much for all the advice I will try it all on the next page I add to the site.

Here is a link to a page on the site, file:///Users/nelly/Documents/WEBSITES/Flexipop%20Pro6/Site%20Folder/features07.html

The type is OK on this page, but I had to play about alot with putting it in diferent boxes and cahnging font sizes to ge tit to publish as ‘white’.

cheers,
Neil

Unfortunately this is a link to the file locally on your Mac - which is not accessible to the real world (us).

You will have to get this online somewhere for us to properly diagnose where you are going wrong.

You might also want to consider setting your body style to default to white.

This thread might help to understand why this can be a valuable exercise http://freewaytalk.net/thread/view/123442#m_123447

Thanks DD will read the thread and try to get my head round it.

I haven’t got an example of the text not working on the site as so far I have manged to get round the problem by changing font sizes and putting the parafraphs that don’t display into seperate text boxes to ge them to go white. If I did put one up that has the problem you can’t see any text at all,

Thanks for the tips, wil read the thread and try a few things out and see if it fixes it. I odd thing is it wasn’t doing this until recently, all the earlier pages had no problem with the text and styles I was able to cut and paste and change the colour and font with out this happening. Would be nice to know why FW suddenly started not apllying the cahnges to the text any more.

Verry odd,

Neil

But if we know it is there we can read the underlying code and it will help to diagnose the issue. We dont need to be able to actually see the text!
