[Pro] HTML text box over graphics

I am testing this software and am having trouble doing something that seems simple enough. I am beginning to think that Freeway is not a good fit for me, but I’d like your opinions.

I am creating graphic-heavy websites. In fact, all pages will be completely full of graphics (photos, clipart-like graphics, multiple colored background graphics, etc.), but I also want text boxes on top of the graphics. It seems that Freeway doesn’t allow transparent text boxes on top of graphics (even iWeb allows this so I don’t fully understanding the technical reasons for this limitation).

As a workaround I can create the page without the text, export it as a GIF, and import it as a background image and then lay out the text. This has the advantage of cutting the number of server hits for graphics to 1 and having a very small file size. On the con side maintenance will be a pain and I am not sure what will happen when browsers display different fonts and font sizes.

Is there a better approach to accomplish my needs while using Freeway? Does this workaround imply that Freeway is probably not the best package for my purposes? Do you have other suggestions for me (I’m not a web designer by trade).

Thank you.

Take a look at the top bar in the Freeway Pro application. You will
see a button that is either labeled Table Layout or CSS Layout,
depending on its current state. If it says Table Layout (as I suspect
it does) then click in. Now draw an HTML box over the top of another
object. You will see that box can float above all other boxes, and can
have a transparent background, and can contain HTML text. If you go
through your existing layout, clicking on each text box separately,
there is a Layer checkbox you can tick in the Inspector which will
turn any table-base element into a layer-based (CSS-positioned)
element. Once you have done this to all of the elements in your
layout, you will see that they each occupy a separate “plane”, and can
be overlapped entirely or partially without any effort on your part at
all.

You are exactly right Walter. Thank you so much for taking the time to help me.

I believe given what I need to do that Express won’t do the job and that I need to buy Pro, correct? I don’t think Express can switch between Table Layout and CSS.

Thanks again!

That is correct. You didn’t mention the version, but you checked “Pro”
in the message form, so I figured that was the version you were using.
Pro is totally worth the extra, so much more you can do without
“getting out and pushing”.
