[Pro] HTML Text hyperlink problem

Hi, I’m a relative newbie to web design. Getting my head round most things, but this has got me stumped. I have created a site in Freeway Pro (5.4.1) with button links and text links. All the button links work but the text links are random. Some work, some don’t. I have lines of text in one HTML box, the first links fail, the rest work. I’ve re-created boxes, copied working ones etc for 2 days, and finally noticed that it’s the links on the left side (first 30mm - ish) that don’t work. If I take a working text link and drag it into that area, it fails. It looks fine, shows the link in the status bar, but in Freeway preview or browser preview the cursor doesn’t change over the text and clicking does nothing. The text links do not sit on any other text or graphic and there is no overlap in any page (apart from the backgroung colour). Any help is much appreciated.

I’ve found another clue - It’s related to the buttons. (Created new master page & deleted bits one at a time - when the buttons are removed, pages based on it work) Seems like anything close to them (20mm to the right or 10mm below, so far) just fails to work. No error messages or anything. The buttons were created using photoshop “save for web” and created with a rollover in freeway as per the tutorial. I’ve tried recreating the buttons from the images I have - still fails.

Just noticed… the problem buttons show up on screen as about 23 x 33px, but when I click on the button, the inspector reports that it is actually 116 x 160px? this would create an overlap if the buttons were indeed that size. Why doesn’t the size I see match what the inspector says?

OK, Fixed it. Saved new graphics & made new buttons, everything works. I’l still mystified as to why the image appeared so different to what the inspector reported, if anyone has any idea, I’m still interested.

Is it possible that the original graphics did not fill the graphic box container and when the rollovers were created the outer boundaries of the graphic box were used ie there was blank space within the boxes that was included on publish.

A way to avoid this is to use Item>Fit Box to Content - once you have imported and scaled the image within the box. Also if you ensure that View>Outlines is on then you will see when this happens.

Thanks for that David. I always work with View>Outlines on, and no ‘shadow’ showed. The odd thing is, when I clicked on, and highlighted, the image box, the selected image box was much smaller on the page than reported by the inspector. Since deleting the buttons and re-creating the artwork, I haven’t been able to emulate this fault. Unfortunately, I didn’t save a copy with the faulty buttons in, so I’m marking this up to experience! The ‘first go’ is up now (www.fortunavilla.co.uk) so I can get on with expanding the content.

Sorry to rain on your parade Mark but there is a text size problem with your index page when viewed in Safari

Have a look at the following screenshot taken from Safari 4.0.3

Now I’m ready to throw the towel in! I’m also using Safari 4.0.3 an mine looks fine. I had some initial trouble getting it to look good in a few different browsers but I thought it was sorted. I’ve checked under 10.5.8 and 10.4.11 (both with Safari 4.0.3) and both look fine? The text is bog standard Times, but the screenshot looks more a non-serif font like Trebuchet? How can that happen?

I think that your problem here is that your Styles are not properly defined

The Sleeps 6-8 etc text is style 19 and the main body text is style 5 - neither of which are specifically defined with a font choice.

It is a good idea to set up a style for your Body text and P tags when you first start a new site - these styles are then used as a base for everything that follows.

In Safari>Preferences>Appearance you can choose what fonts are preferred for display (have a look at what yours is set to) - especially if there is a lack of font information on the page.

Have a look at Dan J’s tutorials at http://home.comcast.net/~fwtuts/ for some tutorials on CSS styling. Especially the one on styling the Body tag.

Thanks David, I see now. My Safari prefs were set to default, which just happens to be Times. I’ll correct the page later today. At least I now know to check different setting in Safari to check what I’m doing.
