[Pro] HTML5/Ogg/WebM Issues

I have a Keynote presentation (with voiceover) that I’ve converted to a QuickTime movie that I want to imbed in a website. The 1024 x 768 pixel sized presentation runs just under 7 minutes.

The .mov file is a hefty 128Mb. I used QuickTime Player 7 to convert it to the web, making a .m4v file of a svelte 35Mb (960 x 720) and an even slimmer .ogv file of 29Mb.

I uploaded a simple trial with the .m4v and it appeared to work just fine. Streamed easily and smoothly with Safari (surprisingly as I only have a 2Mb DSL connection).

Since this presentation will go out to user with unknown system / browser setups, I had some concern regarding Theora and webM users. So I installed the SublimePlayer action and believe I followed the instructions to a T.

I created a .mp4 file weighing 68Mb and used Miro Video Converter to create a .ogv of 39Mb and .webm of 12Mb. With my SublimeVideo account set up and code embedded in the action, I uploaded everything.

The results using Sublime and Safari were disappointing. The video streaming doesn’t allow the download to get ahead of the playback, so tons of jerky starts and stops. After the movie has completed, moving the slider back allows the viewing of the video content, but there was no audio until I started playing with the expand/contract controls (arrows at the right of the player).

In Firefox, I got the poster frame and the movie “appeared” to be starting, but it just sits there.

By chance I clicked on the arrow player controls using a magic mouse right click and discovered that SublimeVideo had served up HTML5 in both cases.

Any suggestions to make things run more smoothly?

( I’m running MacOS 10.6.8 )

I have seen that before, usually it meant that the OGG video wasn’t actually playable. Test with a different video. The Fox slate is here: http://scripty.walterdavisstudio.com/sublime/test.theora.ogv http://scripty.walterdavisstudio.com/sublime/test.webm http://scripty.walterdavisstudio.com/sublime/test.mp4

The Flash fallback is really reserved for those who cannot view the HTML5 video content. I haven’t seen the issue you’re describing, though. Try clearing your caches. (If it’s really stubborn, try renaming the files and re-upload.)

Try just hosting the MP4 version on Sublime, and see how it looks and behaves then. You will be serving more Flash, since only Safari and Chrome users can see the MP4, but you may have better luck with Firefox that way. Also check your site’s browser statistics and see what browsers you should really care about.

Thanks Walter,

One other question. Do I need to copy the code for Sublime supplies to the tag (as they suggest), or is that handled by the SublimePlayer action?

The Action takes care of that for you. You only need to put your ID token into the Action and it writes all the rest.
