[Pro] hyperlink external check button gives no response

Applied hyperlink to some external files but when I click
the check button I don’t receive a response like when I
set my internal links.

What response do you get?

I check my external links all the time and they always say OK.

Are your links in the form of web address followed by path to the file and lastly a file name with no trailing slash?

Well, no they are not setup that way. Maybe Im thinking about this wrong. The files are not actually outside of my website. They are files within the folder “WEBSITE”.

Yes - you are thinking about this incorrectly.

The link checker is to check links to files that are hosted on other web sites ie external web links.

Gotcha. So is my process okay?

No - the link checker is to check External links ie links that you want to check are valid.

So if you are using a link to a page or a file that is hosted on another server somewhere then the checker makes sure that that the file or page is where you said it was.

But I can create my links through external hyperlink but just don’t need to check (button) for validity?

If you want to, but you fall into a hole between how Freeway treats
internal vs. external links.

If you create your own internal links using the external interface,
Freeway won’t police those for you, and you can’t check them with the
Check URL button. IF you rename one of your files, Freeway will not
update the pages that link to it, and your links will die.

If you let Freeway build internal links automatically, then they will
always be right, even if you change one of your pages later. Each time
you publish, the link tree is calculated again from scratch.

Now if you enter your external links as fully-qualified URLs
(protocol, hostname, domain name, tld, path to file), the link checker
button will actually work as designed.

Also that example link that you were proposing is not a valid link from your hosted web page. You cannot link from your server back to a file on your Desktop.

If you want to link to an external file and have FW take care of its upload then use one of the actions like Graphic Link to File, Graphic Link to PDF, Link to File or Link to PDF.

Or you could use one of the other actions like Upload Stuff which can be used to get a file to your server in a known location and then create a link to the file in its uploaded position using the External section.

Thanks to Dave and Walter both. I think what I want to do will be best accomplished with an action Link to File. Your help is much appreciated.

I’m new to the MacBook and Freeway (2 weeks) so I’m sure
you’ll see me again.
