[Pro] I give up

Hello Friends,

I have determined that Exhibeo has great promise, but it is not ready for prime time. I do not regret spending the $19.99 for the program because I think eventually it will be something that will replace Showcase. For now I will be going back to Showcase for my web Gallery.

I’m not ready to give up, but there are a few things that are keeping me from using it live on my web site.

By way of a feature request, I’d like to see some sort of pre-loading of the images. Facebook is a great example of this. Once you load a page, it starts downloading everything…so it’s ready before you click on it. If the images were to start loading immediately (before you click to go to the next image) that would make it quite a bit more useful. People just won’t patient enough for images to load on each click. They’ll hit the back button instead and head to another site.

For example, I put a test on my web site, here: http://www.amesphotos.com/hansen

You’ll see that even on a fast connection, it takes some time to browse the gallery.

Also, in the bloxx gallery, I’d like to see an addition to the GUI…I expected the next image to load when I click on the image. Instead, I have to use the nav buttons, which aren’t obvious in the upper right. That should be an easy implementation?

I’ll be patient, because at this price, Exhibeo shows a lot of promise, and it’s exactly what I’m looking for.

it takes some time to browse the gallery.

Some of your images are 1/2 a Meg - at that size they are going to take time.

The images are exactly how Exhibeo processed them, so it’s not my fault, either

I get that, but you miss the point. It’s not “that” particular page, it’s in general. Besides, I’m a photographer…the images have to be detailed and sharp.

By not pre-loading the files, it makes things even worse if the files are large.

Facebook doesn’t seem to have this problem, even with relatively large images. I suggest seeing how they do it and mimic the process.

My point being that if you start with large file sizes the end result will be large file sizes.

There has been some discussion here about creating/optimising the Raw Exhibeo picture files as close to the expected display size/quality. I am sure with your skills with images it would not be an issue for you to create a set of images optimised for web use.

Better pre-loading certainly would be helpful for my purposes, no matter the file size.

Hi guys,

Firstly, Jerry. What would you need to see to keep you on Exhibeo? At the very least the same themes, I guess?

William, I just tried your site on a fairly standard broadband connection and the loading was nice and quick. The only time I had to wait for anything was if I skipped through the images without actually looking at them. The trouble with automatic preloading is the situation where you have dozens of galleries with hundreds (or more) images per page. Expecting the user to download all of them for the sake of a few seconds, particularly in this day of mobile browsing, is not good. Perhaps we could provide an option that lets the user decide if they want to fully preload the images, though?

Adding a click to the image (like we do in Showcase and Focus) would be simple enough. The reason we didn’t is because the arrows are static, and the image can be swiped on touchscreen devices.

I don’t think you need to pre-load all the images, just the “next” one, or perhaps two. I suspect that’s what Facebook does, and I consider that a model for what people expect when viewing galleries online. After all, galleries are what Facebook is all about.

I also suppose there’s a difference in how people look at a gallery, depending on why they visited a site. If the photos are from an event like a wedding or vacation, and the people are highly interested, they’ll tend to give each image a good look.

However, if the person is a customer looking for a prospective photographer, they click through very rapidly. They might be visiting 20 web sites, and if the most responsive site wins. This would be my primary use for Exhibeo.

Most people have very little patience when “window shopping”, clicking on the “next” button after 1/10 of a second.

In addition to my sideline as a photographer, I am a Senior IT Specialist at Penn State University, and I do a fair amount of usability testing, for what it’s worth.

Anyway, if you would consider adding something like that, it would make the product even more attractive to people like me.

Hello Joe,

The only theme that I use is Bloxx because it resembled Showcase with the
lightbox theme.
I would like the option of immediately displaying the thumbnails without
the one image that the consumer does not know that they have to click on
to see the rest of the photos. Also, I always put my custom heading at the
top of the page. I do not have that option.
As far as the photos not loading quickly, that is not a problem for me. I
process my camera raw (25meg) photos in Adobe Lightroom and export the
finished photos as 6 inch 300 DPI JPEGS. Then I import them into Showcase
or Exhibeo. No Problems.
The images in Exhibeo are great but I noticed that the thumbnails are
smaller in size (speaking of kilobytes) and the larger images are twice
the kilobytes.
The only other problem which has been discussed before is the constant
publishing of the Exhibeo page even though there were not any changes. It
makes it more difficult to just upload changed files from my site folder.

Sincerely,

– Jerry Jambazian

I purchased Exhibio last night thinking I could use it to produce an attractive html 5 presentation on a new site to avoid using flash video but in practice I’ve discovered it doesn’t seem to work at all well with Internet Explorer and there are no transitions, which renders it fairly pointless. I hope it will improve but in the meanwhile I have to look elsewhere.

Sorry to hear that, Ashley. Out of interest, what theme were you using?

I’m not sure any of them work properly Joe. Impress and Slide don’t show any transitions at all. The images just change without any effects taking place. Blox doesn’t work properly either because the starting image is wrong.

I’ve just been looking on the iPhone simulator and the Impress theme looks brilliant with full swipe control but I just don’t see how we can realistically use exhibeo if it won’t even work with Internet Explorer 8 and 9. Is this something Softpress can fix and if so when?

Hi Ashley,

We won’t be able to make the animation the same in IE8 or 9 (it’s done using CSS3 transitions, something that aren’t yet supported in IE). We’re hoping to make the transitions a little smoother (by fading) in a future version.

One thing to remember is that people using IE won’t be getting that sort of effect on any website. They are getting the most important thing, though – the images.

Hi Joe,
Looking at the Impress theme on IE9 is not a good viewer experience because the images are just appearing and disappearing abruptly in random positions.

I was tempted to suggest we could use a script that identifies the browser and then serves up a flash animation for IE but it looks like Hype somehow manages to make these animations appear correctly in the vast majority of browsers and I really think Exhibeo needs to find similar workarounds.

But aside from all the interesting postings, HOW does one cause the preloading of images? For the same page, or for the following one?

There is so much to like about Exhibeo now, and I can see where there’s much room for improvement and enhancement. Softpress, keep up the great work and please keep updating Exhibeo! It can be great!

Does anyone know how to open the links to images in another tab or window in Showtime?
