[Pro] Image Dilemma?

I’ve gotten into the habit of designing web sites with either colored or textured backgrounds. As you know, this creates some challenges when it comes to placing photos—especially those with white backgrounds, which is one of the reasons I’ve become a big fan of PerfectMask from OnOne.

Anyway, for better or worse, my clients prefer softer backgrounds so I guess I’ve created a monster of sorts. What I’m trying to figure out is the best file format for photos that have to be placed on a colored or textured background. As far as I know the ONLY option is PNGs for this specific use.

I just finished editing a few photos in Photoshop and I instinctively saved them as PNG-24 files. According to PS, the image saved will take 8 secs @ 512 Kbps to download, which seems like a lot. Conversely, if I save the image at PNG-8 the download speed drops to 2 secs @ 512 Kbps, which is great, but image resolution suffers quite a bit.

  • What do you experts do in this situation?
  • Should I be using a different file format?
  • Is there an optimal page size for webpages?

Any suggestions or advice are greatly appreciated.

Please, link an example of the effect you are striving for… I need an image
to visualize what you are asking
