David, I just tried importing a stylesheet from another FW file and the FW doc saved without a problem. Not sure why you are getting the error. Sorry I’m not much help here.
There are a couple of threads here of people who updated to the latest under Lion and are unable to save anything. The solution seems to be deleting all the com.softpress plists from your Preferences folder and restarting. Not sure if it’s related, but I thought it might be connected. Of course if you’re not using Lion, that’s not it.

And no I am not on Lion yet - my other half has too much stuff (AppleWorks) - on here that she says she will make my life hell if she can’t use it anymore.
This kind of message appeared a lot of times to me under the following circumstance:
I once had a USB Hub that sometimes disconnect by just the whiff of a fly. It self reconnected but the issue was, that the opened Freeway-Files lost the path and never got them back. This was very annoying cause the only chance to get the file back was to create a new folder, change the path to it in doc settings and (as far as I remember) I got it to run.
Well David - I know this is not helpful, but FW files sometimes behave a bit strange (although my issue was damaged hardware nothing to do with freeway itself).
Anyway - since buying a new drive, everything runs like a charm. But what to recommend you to solve your issue?
Check the chance of bundle all your stuff within a new folder /file combi?
Uahhh - I long thought if I should write this but let me take the chance here to wish you “Merry Christmas from Germany”.

Wow. That’s now a seriously old bit of software. If I were you I’d plan an exit strategy. Not from your other half - I mean from being held back by AppleWorks!
A new Mac for you, for one, so you can keep up with new software developments. But also make sure all her data is in a more readily accessible format. I don’t know what other software can read AppleWords files these days. If your Mac died and had to be replaced that could be the end of all those documents!

I have been trying to encourage her to recreate in Pages but she is a teacher and has been creating teaching resources in Claris/Appleworks for ever. As a result she has amassed a bucketload of stuff and she would kill before giving it up.
If anyone knows of a bit of software that could convert them I would be eternally grateful. Then we can consider the move to Lion.
I-work (both 8 and 9 that i have) opens Appleworks documents flawlessly, and probably opens clarisworks docs as well.
opening them is never an issue. it’ be mindless.
there will appear to be a slight piffle over which section (pages, numbers, keynote) of i-work gets chosen to open your AppleWorks doc,.
the annoyance will take the form of such drivel as - “cwk-doc xyz is NOT a spreadsheet”.
ya, well we already know that !
… and we can quickly attend to this ennervation by setting the “open with” parameter in the “get info” panel of the doc you are trying to open.
once you know the Get Info panel trick, you’re dialed in.
caution… rant:
Applworks may be old, but … it is Hella FAST. it is not "Office " , like i-work is. so, you can get more done, in less time, with much less grief.
sure, the spreadsheet sometimes changes fonts all by itself (yup… it certainly does), but on the other hand, the writing part of the program does not annoyingly renumber your lists without permission. and you can draw basic stuff in a heartbeat.
back “in the day” Clarisworks came with a BOOK, and by working your way thru the book, you would gain a deep and lasting understanding of how shxt worked. I-work = No Book. thusly, a lack of understanding. end result is a Lot more features, most of which you can’t figure out how to turn off.
Appleworks requires the Rosetta system feature to run on intel units. this means Snow Leopard is the end of the line. but. SN has quite a few more years of remaining viability.
i own and operate both Appleworks and I-Work. they are different animals. both are good, both do similar things. But applworks has charm, wit, and soul, while i-work … runs like it’s ported over from DOS
Get me something that will open them and I will be happy.
that’s rather the conditional requirement for xmas day happyness … but … we shall try. : )
this will not work to the point of “perfection”, in that it will not bring over total graphic functionality with it, BUT it will drag over your graphics (at least it transports mine, which are mostly lines and patterns) from cwk files.
open your cwk drawing doc and make it good and Big, it likes big. 200 ~ 400% big, to get detail and kill off the jaggies.
then invoke the “Grab” program that all (i suspect) macs come with for free.
in Grab, try the Capture>Window routine, and then Save with any name you want to the desktop.
open Pages and try New>New from Template Chooser>Blank (template)
then just effn’ drag that Grab file from your desktop and drop it into the open pages window.
on my end, they open every time, and then i expand or manipulate it to scape off the included.Grab caca. (metrics tab in the Inspector makes it big/smaller)
so that’s the peter way if stuck wih hung-up cwk files and need’n to shove them into pages. it is not perfect, but… it is “free”.
one could probably make the procedure a macro if desperate (or bored).
i have extensively toyed with all the ‘Save As’ Appleworks options to not-much-satisfaction or acceptable smooth graphics. this Grab routine is my best redneck solution. i own Illustrator. Grab/Pages works better.
I’m having difficulty understanding how to import a stylesheet from another FW file. I use the cogwheel at the foot of the Edit Styles dialog and look for .css files in another Site Folder. But when I click import the styles aren’t there, just a list of items from the page?
