I’m trying to import a bunch of pictures (into different sized graphic boxes) that are hi-res cmyk tiffs (originally used in print magazines). No matter what format I use (jpg, png, gif) the images look either fuzzy, pixelated or have alot of artifacts. Am I going to have to convert these pictures into another format that Freeway can handle properly, or is there another way to get decent looking images thru Freeway? Thanks!
I always keep my images in RGB - only converting copies of them to CMYK for print use. Then I can use the original RGB images for other purposes (Web, Inkjet Printing, Retouching etc.). If you only have the CMYK versions, then I would convert them to RGB - this makes for smaller file sizes and Freeway will display RGB better than CMYK. You won’t loose any quality in the photos converting back this way (you would have lost information converting from RGB to CMYK - hence good practice to keep RGB as the master copy). It is fine keeping them saved as .tiff as Freeway will convert them to the desired format for you - once imported, check the inspector pallet at the third tab and see what file format you are previewing. If it is gif, change it to jpeg. If you still see artifacts, change the resolution from 75% to 100% and preview again.

You know, I don’t even convert stuff to CMYK any more? With a proper
colour workflow set up with Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign/Acrobat the
conversion gets done at final PDF output stage.

Have you tried importing them as they are? Freeway is happy to use
TIFFs directly - or PSD, PDF, Illustrator and so on. You may find
that (a) things go faster if you resize them so they’re not
absolutely enormous, and (b) you get slightly more control and
predictability over colour if you convert to RGB and set the profile
to sRGB.

Concur with Keith, I’ve found found that Freeway prefers images nearer the size they will be used at, smaller files look much better. I beleive there is a technical reason for this but if you know then its not an issue.
I work from Lighroom which makes exporting an optimised files nice and easy for what I need when using Freeway.
