[Pro] Is it worth updating t from 6 to 7?

I’ve been using Freeway for years and for years Freeway has been saying that they’d have to rewrite the code from the ground up to give us things like multiple undos. They’ve had years to do that and still haven’t done it. I’m so frustrated with Freeway 6’s bloated slow as molasses old, old code even running on a tricked out 5K iMac with a 1TB Flash drive.

The question is, would it be worth it for me to upgrade to Freeway 7, or is it just as bloated as freeway 6? I know they’ve once again, as they have for the last 6 years, not given us multiple undos but I was wondering if 7 is much faster and less bloated than 6.

I run pro audio and pro video apps and they zip around. Whenever I use Freeway, it’s a personal invitation to the spinning beachball and waiting 5 seconds for simple things like cut and paste. Single undo is from the 1990s. Freeway is the only app I own that only has one undo.

Any real world advice on whether to upgrade or not?

Being honest,

Richard

Download the v7 demo and see what happens.

Arguably the biggest change between 6 & 7 are the responsive tools, but in terms of raw performance I’m not sure that much has changed.

I suppose the decision to upgrade depends a lot on the type of work you do, the type of features you need, and how often you use FW.

Thank you.

I use Freeway almost daily but was just looking for a performance boost from 6.

I use Freeway almost daily but was just looking for a performance boost from 6.

I use 6 and 7 on an iMac 27 that is far older than yours and I dont have the performance issues you talk about.

I’ve tried it on two Mac Pros and three different iMac with the same slow result.

I edit video video all day without a problem.

Load up freeway and the beachball and hesitation appear.

I used GoLive for a few years and it was by far faster. It’s not my imagination.

It’s not my imagination.

Not suggesting it is - but maybe there are other factors at play.

Do you use a lot of Fonts?

From another perspective — yes, for me it was wise to upgrade to Fwy 7 Pro from Fwy 6 Pro, for this reason: the longer you go without upgrading over the years, the harder it gets when you eventually decide to upgrade.

I started with Fwy 3.5 Express, then went to 4 Express. Then the needed upgrade from Fwy 4 Express to Fwy 6 Pro was a nightmare that involved much reworking of each page on my website. I was back and forth with the (very helpful) Softpress tech support on issue after issue. It took an entire winter to make the leap from 4 to 6.

So I downloaded the demo Fwy 7 Pro, Previewed each page with 7 Pro on a duplicated and renamed Freeway file, found it all working fine, and uploaded it. I checked some of the newly uploaded 7 Pro pages live on the internet, and all is well!

So, bottom line, I am now current with the technology available on Freeway, whether or not I decide to make the jump to “responsive.”

Just the standard fonts.

I run many resource intensive apps on several different Macs, video and audio, and none of them bog down like Freeway 6 does on these same Macs.

Freeway 6 is just not responsive for me. I wait 3-5 seconds every time I copy and paste for example. I was hoping for at least a performance boost in 7, but it doesn’t appear that much has changed between 6 & 7 on the performance front.

So no one else is seeing sluggishness in Freeway?

Thanks.

Here’s the best troubleshooting advice I can give you. In your System Preferences (the thing with the pretty gears on it), click the Users and Groups button, (maybe) click the lock and authenticate to access the user controls (depends on your setup there whether you need to do this) and then create a new user account. Switch into that account (Apple menu, log out, then log in as the new user). Open Freeway, and create a new site. See if any of your speed issues exist in that new and very fresh environment. (My guess is, it will run like a JATO-assisted land speed record car.)

Everyone else here is a) not trying to edit your document specifically, and b) not logged in as you with all the fonts enabled that you have (some may be damaged, and this is the only Achilles heel of Freeway that I know of). They’re not reporting this issue, and it doesn’t seem to be widespread, or there would have been more report of it. (I don’t see this, anyway, and I’m rocking a Mac Pro from 2008.)

If this little test shows you the real speed of modern Freeway, then you have some digging to do to figure out what is damaged in your regular user account that is causing this slowdown for you. It may be corrupted fonts or preferences files, third-party software like Haxies or DefaultFolder, or more prosaically, a font manager or corrupted font file. It may also be the document itself, particularly if you started the site in an earlier version of Freeway and then upgraded it with a newer version or versions of Freeway.

Back in your regular account, try creating a brand new document from no template (just blank pages). See if you can get that to stall. If you can’t, then maybe the document itself is the issue, and you can try sending it to support(a)softpress.com for autopsy.

A wild shot in the dark: I was using Freeway 6 (Express), formatting the pages via the Inspector (bold, italics, font sizes, etc., and all the combos thereof). I ended up with something like 800 styles! Freeway was so slow, it was almost enough to drive me back to drink, after 44 years on the wagon.

Then I upgraded to 6 Pro, where I could manage styles. I cut down to about 24 styles that meet all my needs. And lo and behold, Freeway is fast again. Since then I’ve upgraded to 7 Pro and kept my styles at about 2 dozen, and it’s still fast.

Is it possible that your freeway file has become bloated with too many styles? That’s what slowed my Fwy down to a maddeningly slow pace.

Just a wild guess.

Two very good suggestions that I will try next week and report back.

I’m glad that others aren’t seeing the slow speed that I am experiencing.

Thanks.

I was thinking the same thing. It’s far more likely that the problem lies in the site document than in the Mac OS user account setup – especially as other apps don’t show slow tendencies.

Graphics Preview set to on with lots of large original images to redraw all the time? Or perhaps lots of images copy/pasted directly into boxes rather than imported (File > Import) from image files on disk, bulking up the site document enormously? Those are some of the things that can cause slowdowns. The styles thing is definitely one to check, too.
