Kelley,

I just found this and thought you would appreciate it: The Best Way to Learn CSS

You might already know all this, but it seems to be the best introduction to CSS that I’ve seen.

Why does most CSS syntax have to be lowercase, but font names start with a capital letter? Are font names the only exception to that rule?

A quick Google search revealed that the general consensus is that you probably don’t have to capitalize your font names.

However, best practice seems to be to capitalize “proper” fonts (Open Sans, Helvetica, Roboto) and leave “generic” fonts uncapitalized (serif, sans-serif).

When in doubt, follow best practice.

I’m really making some headway. This week, I finished several CSS courses at Codecademy, which, for me, was a lot better than lynda.com—primarily because of the live examples and chapter tests.

Quite frankly, I should have done this long ago. I also understand why everyone relies so heavily on browser development tools. Very helpful stuff.

The ONLY problem with all of this is when I’m studying, I’m not earning. :frowning: But, hopefully, all of this will pay off in the long run.

I am glad you are progressing - I feel bad not being able to spend time
with every question, or provide more examples - which reflect my limited
time, not my enthusiasm for your journey.

In another life, I studied martial arts. It was very competitive (mostly
with yourself) but it was a lot of fighting. On reaching Shodan status (my
first black-belt) I discovered what they called the ‘black-belt attitude’ -
the confidence which comes from knowing that although you have mastered
fighting techniques, you have actually transcended fighting itself. It
becomes more of a philosophy than tradecraft.

By that I mean it is without doubt a most satisfying feeling to be certain
that you are a master of your craft and not merely the beneficiary of
undirected talent and good fortune. How that translates into dollars may be
a different thing altogether, but nobody can take that understanding and
self-awareness away from you - it is yours to preserve and shepherd, in
modesty, and to use as continue your journey.

Ernie, I think you’re selling yourself short. You have spent a tremendous amount of time helping me and I truly appreciate all of your efforts.
