[Pro] Kinda like Netflix

So I want to build a site with Freeway Pro kinda like a real real simple version of the Netflix site. I need to be able to maintain and update it with ease.

Any ideas on what I could use? Any extensions?

Thanks

That depends a lot on scale, and how you plan to update it. Also if you need to sell subscriptions, and if you need search, or categories, suggestions, or hundreds of other details that make Netflix work. Do you have more of a brief here?

Thanks, Walter. Sorry for being so vague. I forget people can’t read my mind. I just want the rows that scroll left and right and the text to pop up when you hover over a graphic. Sorry, I don’t know the official names of these features. Scale is very small, something like 12 categories and a hundred titles or so. No subscriptions. All sales.

Thanks!

If these are going to be static – everybody sees the same things when they come to the site – then you could build such a site manually in Freeway with nothing more exotic than ScriptyLightbox and 100 little “pagelets” made the old fashioned way. If you need the other Netflix features, like suggestions and unique content (current_user likes action movies) then you really will need to get into the database and application server end of the pool.

What are you using for commerce – are you locking everybody out with something like SiteLok and then letting registered (paid) users in to see the static content?

Do you have any need going forward to be able to tell who liked what?

There are a lot of specific attributes that make up the adjective “Netflix-like” so hopefully this won’t seem like a bunch of extraneous questions. The more you can tell me about your business and billing model, and the user-story for this site, the more accurately I can advise you.

Let’s see, how do I explain this? I want to know if it’s possible to create something like the browser experience of Netflix with Freeway. The multiple rows that scroll left and right. The pop-up text when you hover over a graphic. Click on a title to go to that title’s main page. Click on buy to purchase the title. There will be no video streaming or memberships or ratings or anything like that. I’m just thinking about the raw basics here.

I don’t have any idea how to create those scrolling rows of graphics and the pop-up text.

If it’s not possible to do this in Freeway, I’ll just abandon the idea.

Thanks! I very much appreciate the help.

Have you worked with the Carousel Action or the Target Show/Hide Layer Action? You can make the side-scroll effect with Carousel, and the popups with a combination of Rollover and Target Show/Hide Layer.

I would caution you to be careful of putting too much on a single page, though. If you want to put the teasers for all 100 movies onto a single page, you probably could, but nobody would want to wait while it all downloaded. Start out by building just one row, see how it works for you, and take it from there.
