[Pro] Looking for a "open" font

I would like to find or make a font that would be on a page that is, say, all blue, and the font would be large and open so you could see a graphic showing through the open letters. The graphic would be like a lake or photo of some trees.

Any thoughts on how to accomplish this?

There is a trick you can use in Freeway to do this, but it will rely
on your background behind the font being a solid color. Here’s what
you do:

  1. Draw a Graphics box and insert your photo into it.
  2. Duplicate that box, with 0,0 offsets, and use Apple-B to clear the
    picture out of it.
  3. Double-click into the top box and type in your word or text. Set
the style of the letters to the font and size you like (big and chunky
will help for this sort of design).
  4. Set the font color to Knockout.
  5. Set the background color of the graphic text box to the same color
    as your page (white?).
  6. Click on the pasteboard, and you should see your text filled with
    the photo.

If you want something more elaborate, or you need to have this effect
floating over a non-solid background, then you’ll need to use
Photoshop to build this. There, it’s just a matter of using a text
layer as a mask below the photo layer (option-click the boundary
between the two layers in the Layers palette), and setting the output
format in Save for Web to PNG-24 (or GIF, if you can pick one
background matte color to be the “average” of your multi-color
background). When you place this image in Freeway, be sure to use a
pass-through image (check that box in the Import dialog box). That way
your carefully constructed transparency effect won’t be converted to
JPEG.
