[Pro] MAMP Pro

Sounds good, but, aside from a new website, wouldn’t I want to leave the live MySQL database alone? Especially if my client has made changes while I was working on their website and assuming that none of the changes I made affected the database structure?

Don’t upload the config. file, there’s no need. Remember to export the local db and import it into the remote server and upload any site files that may have been changed. That should do it.

Yes that’s a problem, and in that case you definitely do not want to overwrite any changes they made. I assumed the site wasn’t live yet and therefore the client didn’t have access to it (Perch). If the only changes you’re making are to the site files and not the db then you can ignore my suggestion about the db export/import.

Okay, now that I have my local development server setup, as well as the live server, how should I handle a staging server? I was thinking about just using a subdomain off of my own website.

Something like client1.mydomain.com, client2.mydomain.com. What do you think?

I setup a sub-domain on the client’s server and use that for staging. Since it’s already on the end server I’ll know if there are any issues unique to that environment before going live. Of course, as Walter has suggested numerous times you could also get a VPS hosting account and use that but might be a bit more ‘hands-on’ than simply using a sub-domain.

How do you name your MAMP Pro hosts? Do you use a short name for your client or do you use the whole website name?

(i.e. wmp vs williamsburgmemorialpark.com)

I use the normal domain name but with a .site extension. It doesn’t matter what you name the site.
