I have added a tiled background via the paint icon to my master page. Trouble is, the regular page does not show the tiles background even tho it show the correct master (only have 1) as its master. What am I doing wrong?

You have created a child page of your master (dragged a master page into your site folder) and then applied the tiled background to your master page after creating your initial page!!!
Delete the page in your site folder and start again unless you’ve done laods of work?
Now select your master page, style it how you wish (background tile etc)… then drag another ‘new’ master page into your site folder. With this new page still selected click the preview tab at the top & you will see what you are looking for!
Remember, use master pages to create the fundamental foundations of your site that with always remain the same, when a change is made to a ‘master page’ it will change every instance of that on all the child pages too!
Test it out and play about until you are familiar with what is possible.
