[Pro] Master page woes

Hi guys,

I have been setting up my site and have an issue with the Master pages.

I created a master page and then set up 7 normal pages from the master. Once they were up and running added the links for the relevant pages on the master page. I previewed it and it all worked fine.

So it looked like this:

I then went to edit one of the pages. I couldn’t get it how I wanted so I wanted to start again, so re-applied the master page settings.

However, the re-applied settings meant that the nav menu on the right looked fine in Freeway but like this when previewed:

So I deleted the page and just added a new master, now all new masters come out the same! Does anyone know why this might be?

All of the elements of the nav are simple rollovers with two images … very simple! But I can’t see why they would now stack on each other.

I just wanted to add that all of the original pages that I made are still fine, it is just new pages that come out strange!

Do you mean that you created a new master ie master2 - if so are your new pages set to use master2?

Best before reapplying a master to delete everything on the page that is present on the master so you do not get duplicates on top of each other.

Sorry, I didn’t explain it properly.

I deleted the actual web page, not the master.
I then added a new web page, from the Master 1.

It’s these new web pages, from the same Master that has always been
there, that are not working.

Hi guys,

I think I have sorted it out myself. Somehow I had changed the master, but the other pages hadn’t changed so I didn’t notice anything different on those pages.

I’m still not totally sure what exactly went wrong, I will leave the pages live for you guys to look at and inspect if you want to … but to solve it I removed all the links from the Master, deleted all of the web pages, then created a brand new master, deleted the old master, and re-created the site from the new master.

Now it’s all working fine

Very often - if you do not revisit your masters - then if something gets nudged out of place (on the master) then you wont notice until you create a new page from the dodgy master as existing pages will remain the same.

Remember that if you are working on a master the page scale/ruler bars (top and left) will be yellow rather than the white of a regular page.

Once you move or change a master item on a child page, FW no longer considers it a master item for that child page and wants to add those items again when you reapply the master (that’s the way it’s supposed to work), and that can cause doubling up.

What I do (when I can get away with it), is delete the master items on the child page and then reapply the master.

It can be helpful to create a master page that is entirely blank. Applying this to a page will then reveal all the items no longer associated with the original master.

You can then delete the appropriate bits, if necessary, and then reapply another or the original master again, knowing that nothing will double up.

This… is a very cool-sounding tip! Thanks Ian, I’d never thought
of doing this. Nifty.
