[Pro] Membership - Forums

I need to add a membership component to my website (registered users) and I’d also like to add forums.
I’ve gone thru the threads and the most recent seems to be from 2012.
Can anyone recommend an action/plugin that handles membership & forums?

Thanks
Judith

I don’t know about FW actions but this sort of functionality is can be fairly easily accomplished with certain CMS via plugins. What’s nice is that these things are usually deeply integrated into the core CMS which might offer benefits in terms of features and control.

Arggghhhh.
I was hoping to dodge the CMS bullet for the moment.
I know someone on the forums recommended Expression Engine, but that is one area where EE does not excel.

Have a CMS that you love? Adore? Wouldn’t think of ever leaving?

Theoretically…could I use WP as the CMS & use a theme?

I’m not saying it’s impossible to do with FW. For example, Vanilla is a beautiful 3rd Party forum app that could bolted onto a FW site.

My favs? I’ve found MODX to be a pretty flexible CMS for a wide range of sites be it small and simple or scary big and complex. It has a nice forum plugin and I think they may have some sort of membership plugin also. If not it would be easy to integrate a 3rd Party solution into MODX. I also put together a brief tut on integrating FW with MODX http://xiiro.com/musings/2013/02/05/modx-freeway/. Joomla is another option.

WP could be a good option but in terms of creative freedom and flexibility it can’t touch MODX.

Grazie Todd!
Funnily enough I was just browsing thru your Musings section. Will take a look at this & fingers crossed that it will do the trick.
I’ve used WP for two other elements on this behemoth of a site which is why I mentioned. Devil that you know … and all that.

If understand correctly you’re already using WP for aspects of this (I assume) FW-built site? If so, then I would be reluctant to introduce yet another CMS into the mix. But perhaps I’m misunderstanding.

Not exactly.
I’ve got the core site: http://world-eats.org that’s built on FW.
The Calendar (http://calendar.world-eats.org/) and our Conversations magazine (http://conversations.world-eats.org/) run on WP and simply linked to each other. Stand alone items.
Ideally, what I need is to have a member registration on the core site and the FW site is going to need a CMS of some sort so others can add content & edit.

Nice tutorial BTW…poking around on MODX now.

As mentioned in the tut I had to take the FW/MODX online demo down, but if you want to see what the MODX back-end looks like (with a FW demo site) then contact me off-list and I’ll send the guest login un/pw.
