I’m not sure if this will help or hurt us smaller design studios. I suppose Unilever would be outsourcing more of their work, but all of these laid off employees could conceivably become competitors.

Man, this is dumb. The time to spend on marketing is when the economy is down. You get much more for your money then, and you stay ahead of everyone who is running scared.
Hope and change can’t overcome the inertia of every bank in the world partying like it’s 1929 with other people’s money during the lead up to the 2008 meltdown. I shudder to think what would have happened had an austerity-friendly neolibertarian taken the reins in 2009…
