Now that I’m a little more experienced with FWP, I want to go back into a few of my sites and update the Master Pages with an inline design. Plus, I plan on taking full advantage of the power of Master Pages for universal changes. After I’ve made the updates I want to apply the new Master to several existing pages.
Are there any precautions I should take when doing this? (i.e link breakage, etc.)
I posted earlier about an inline master and I’ve had some issues which may be of my own making, but a headache never the less. I had an instance of the master duplicating items on my pages. I would also like to know best practice with masters.
What I would do is create a new page based on the master, so you can see everything that the master provides, then flick back and forth between that page and the other page you want to re-master, until you have a good idea what’s unique about that page compared with the master. Then cut everything that’s unique to the clipboard, delete everything else, then re-apply the master to get all that content back, and finally paste to return everything else. You may then have to do some additional re-parenting by way of cut and paste-at-a-text-cursor, but that part should be fairly painless.
