[Pro] New page within old non-Freeway site...

This may be a simple question for someone hopefully, because I have hit a wall. I’m new at this.

Let’s say you would like to update just one buried and content full page of a large site made on another platform.

Is there a way within Freeway to create this new page and still have the same url in the browser with the same parent and child pages linking correctly without touching those parent and child pages?

It would be great to understand this before I put the time into redoing the page.

Thank you so much FreePeople! Your help is appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Freewayer

If you create a new Freeway document with just this page in it, you
can make it “fit in” the way you describe. If you know the filename of
the page you want to replace, simply change index.html (the default
that Freeway creates for the first page of any site) in the Inspector
to the filename you need.

Now all of the links you create will have to be made (and managed)
manually, but looking at the existing site in a browser, Control-
clicking on the link and copying it to the Clipboard, and then pasting
that link into the Hyperlink dialog’s External tab back in Freeway.
Naturally, as you replace this one page with the entire site built in
Freeway, you could move up to being able to simply choose links from a
list like Softpress intended.

When you upload your “site”, simply send it into the folder where the
page is supposed to go. Freeway will create a Resources folder in that
sub-folder to hold your graphics and other page resources, and if you
name your new file exactly the same as the page you want to replace it
will delete that file from the server and replace it with your new
page; but other than that, it won’t overwrite anything that’s in that
folder.

I’m just so nervous that I might screw up the whole thing but it seems like how you described it should work.

Is there a way to save the former file that is there just in case something goes wrong?

I use Filezilla for transferring files and was able to pull it off the web with that program but if something goes haywire, will there be any way to go back?

With the Hyperlink dialog external tabs
-parent
-top
-blank
-self

What do these mean when adding the pages links back in?

Thanks so much for your time!

You could simply rename the file on the server from filename.html to
filename.html.bak or something else that won’t clash (or view through
the Web) and you should be fine.

You should leave this alone unless you are using Frames for any
reason. That’s what they’re for.

You’re welcome.

One more question if I may…

When I go to upload with file copy, what web address should I use to publish?

The overall : www.site.com or

The exact page: Custom Application Development Software for Business - Salesforce.com

That should be it for today, Walt. Your a star!

Thanks - Freewayer : )

If you are uploading by FTP, you want to upload into the directory where the original file is. Unless your Web server is on your local network (very unlikely) you won’t upload by file copy ever. If you made your Freeway document without any folders in it (in the site panel) then you would need to specify the path to the folder in the upload dialog. But if you set up your document with a copy of the site hierarchy in the site panel, then you would just upload to your site root and Freeway will work out the folder structure.
