[Pro] New Website - Post your comments

Okay guys, you asked for it. Here’s a preview of a new website I’m working on for one of my clients: http://www.idealynx.com/clients/cs/

Please feel free to evaluate it and offer any constructive advice. Here are some of the things I know I need to work on:

  1. MP3 on About > RFQ page is too big. I probably need to figure out a way to reduce the file size or a better way to serve it. I also wish I could give the user control over it, and yes I know that some of you don’t like embedded audio files, but I needed it to enhance my T-shirt idea.

  2. The video on the Services > 3D Imaging page is really large and delays the page load quite a bit. I need to figure out how to better handle that. Preloading the video while the user is surfing other pages would be great, if that’s possible.

  3. Some of the graphics, primarily jpegs, are too large so I need to play around with reducing the file size. I’m currently using a Photoshop jpeg quality of 12 with Pass Through placement, which is way too big. What size should I be using?

  4. As you’ll see, I’m using a background.gif on most of the pages to produce the white page over red background with glow effect, but on some of the larger pages that simple graphic is upwards of 14,000 bytes. I’m curious if there is another way to achieve the same effect.

  5. I’m probably going to play around with easiForm to get more control over my forms. I’m sure you’ll be hearing from me in the next few days.

On a closing note, I’d like to thank all of the people that helped me build this website (Walter, Dave, Tim, etc.) I couldn’t have done it without you guys. So go ahead, go crazy and let me know what you think. Nothing is off limits (structure, content, graphics) and I’m a pretty tough guy so I won’t be offended by anything you post.

Thanks,
Kelly

Check out the Showcase photos on this web page: http://www.idealynx.com/clients/cs/project5.html

Specifically, the images of the parking lot. Look at the white parking lot lines and the power lines. What the heck is going on here? The lines are way blurry compared to the original photos.

I monkeyed around with Showcase for a while, modifying the large image output but the results were the same. Turning Smoothing OFF seems to help a lot in the Showcase preview, but when I export the images to Freeway the images are nearly the same, regardless of which Large Image Output settings I use. Any ideas on why this is happening or what I’m doing wrong?

I’m trying to reduce some of my image sizes and I just tried the Photoshop save for web and devices option. It cut my image size down to 1/4 of the original size! Definitely worth using.

Are you then using them as pass-through in FW? If not then you are jpegging a jpeg and reducing quality as well.

For most images importing a native Photoshop file PSD or other lossless format like Tiff into FW then changing output quality (compression) there will give great results.

Background images should be prepared in Pshop or even Preview as FW does not process them.

On the images I mentioned above I’m sizing them in PS and using pass-through in FW. For other images I’m just creating a PSD file and letting FW do the heavy lifting.
