MailChimp has a free offer that should be more than large enough for
your use – it’s like 10,000 mail messages a month or something
outrageous like that.
Please don’t try to roll your own here, especially in the United
States. The CAN-SPAM Act has some particularly sharp teeth, and you
want to delegate the whole business of opt-in/unsubscribe/get the
thing delivered at all (past the spam filters) to people whose mission
in life it is to do those things.
It’s not a job for amateurs, and despite the fact that I have been
building Web applications since 1997 and have worn out a number of
propeller-beanies in that time, I consider myself a rank amateur when
it comes to delivering mail.

I know this is sort of OT, but this forum seems to get more traffic

I’ve researching Newsletter apps, and I’ve narrowed it down to a few
and was wondering peoples opinions.
For services: MailChimp:
http://mailchimp.com/
And, Constant Contact:
http://www.constantcontact.com/index.jsp
And, for scripts:
PHP Jabbers Newsletter script:
PHP Newsletter Script | Newsletter Subscription Script | PHPJabbers
And, PHPList:
http://www.phplist.com/
We will be using it for our non-profit animal shelter (which we are
hoping to start within six months or so).
Just wondering people’s opinions.
Thanks.
