[Pro] Organising folders

I am recreating an existing Properties-for-Sale web site and I’d like to keep the folder structure pretty much the same. However, when I drag an image into a page and “Publish”, the copy of the image gets put into a folder named “Resources”. How do I get FWP to put the JPEG image file into a folder named (for example) “prop-1/images/”?

And the same question about pages. How do I create a new page and make FWP put the html file into a folder named (for example) “prop-1”?

Freeway won’t let you name the folder where it stores the images (and other resources) anything other than Resources. I’ve been asking the same thing for years. But you certainly can make as many different folders for your pages, and each of those folders will have it’s own Resources folder containing the images for the files in that folder, so you can have the same result that you’re looking for. To make a new folder, click on the gear menu at the bottom of the site pane and choose New folder.

Thanks for your quick reply, Walter. I’m not so bothered about images. I’ll have a play. I’d seen “Folder” on the “gear menu” but had no idea how to use it or make sure that page files go into it. (One day I’ll get around to reading ALL of TFM.)

To add a page to a folder, just drag the page in the site pane so that it is below and slightly to the right of the folder name. The folder will highlight to indicate that it is “accepting” the drag. You can change the order of the pages in the same manner, although that doesn’t matter very much – it’s just a convenience to you.

Oh, wow! That makes life a lot easier if I can put pages into a folder as an “afterthought”. And the images on that page will also go into the folder in a “Resources” folder?

The images will definitely go in the folder’s resources folder as long as they have never been published elsewhere at exactly the same size and crop. But freeway tries to optimize the site folder, and won’t duplicate an image unnecessarily. So you may find an image tag referencing a different resources folder from time to time. This won’t cause any trouble as long as you use Freeway to do your uploading, as it will always make sure that you have everything you need on the server.

Ah, that’s interesting. In the past I’ve tried to do that manually (avoid duplication) but, by the time a site reaches 600 pages, my memory of where things are tends to fail!

What I was wondering was, if I’ve created a page with an image, then create a folder and drag the page into it, will the image also be moved across? From what you say, I suspect not.

Thanks for your time. It’s interesting to know what goes on “under the hood”.

I can imagine. Not knocking it in any way, but I have to muse that, in ten years of designing for the web, all the sites I’ve designed put together wouldn’t come to anything like that

I have to provide an awful lot of technical information for my customers and, as my site was begun in the days when a MySQL knowledge base wasn’t an option, the number of pages simply grew.

Of course the good point is that I don’t have to worry about SEO!

Hee hee, I just noticed your link. Am I allowed to add: Buy my eBooks at http://www.The-Cool-Book-Shop.co.uk ?

(This is not my huge site, by the way, although it’s quite a few years old now.)

Well, nobody’s complained to me about it yet …

Just so you know, nobody will as long as I have anything to say about
it. Be tasteful, don’t spam the list, don’t link to kink, and you can
generally get away with (virtual) murder.

Thanks Walter; that’s nice. I think I’ll probably stop a good way short of murder though

I just realised. I’ve been creating (crap) web sites since 1995. Mostly with Apple’s “Claris Home Page”, which was excellent in its day but…

Nevertheless, I got up to £200 per month from Google “Adsense” at one point and £1000 per month from eBooks. Nowadays, unfortunately, those figures have fallen somewhat. I suppose I ought to start writing again.

Maybe when I get to grips with FWP5, I might have more incentive. I could actually migrate from a G4 to an Intel Mac! It wouldn’t speed up my one-finger typing but it might reduce the number of mistakes and rework.
