[Pro] PDFs and FTP upload problems

Hoping that someone can help me rather urgently. I am having a huge amount of trouble trying to upload PDFs to a website using the Graphic Link to PDF action on this web page: http://www.saaspc.org.au/resources,saaspc.html.

I have been trying to do this many times. Could you please advise what I can do as it is vital that this files are linked and available. I have used all three modes, “passive”, “non-passive” and “automatic”.

The November 2012 issue is linked which I only managed to do by sheer persistence, or luck. The file sizes vary from 16 - 19mb. Help needed asap!

The first thing I would correct - and this is very important - is your use of a comma in your file/folder path names.

These are not allowed and it wouldn’t surprise me if this is the root cause of your upload issue.

Do you have other files/folders with odd characters in their names?

You should stick to the alphanumerics ie (a-z, A-Z, 0-9) and _ underscores and - hyphens. Anything else should be avoided!

And no spaces either!

But personally I prefer to FTP large files like this to the server using Transmit or similar.

That way I can keep all of them together in one folder (PDFs) because, as I am sure you know, sometimes FW insists on reuploading these at inopportune moments.

When they are small it doesn’t really matter but if you have to wait for 20Mb (or more) to upload…

Found the solution with help from hosting provider. Upload files to server and set up hyperlinks using external links.

Thanks Dave, knew you could help! Will take the “'no commas” on board, but as just posted, found the solution thanks to a great hosting provider I work with.

However, also discussing with client about using other software for uploading their magazine that I have used before.

sure, happy to share.

I sent the large files to the hosting company who placed it into the website files resources section, then they gave me the http links, I then linked them in Edit>hyperlink>external.

I sent the large files to the hosting company who placed it into the website files resources section,

Which you could do yourself easily with an FTP app like Transmit, CyberDuck etc.

Doesn’t really explain why you had an issue uploading with FW - unless it was because of your illegal characters in your file naming.

file sizes and connection problems, not commas.

file sizes and connection problems

Those are not particularly large files. When you say connection problems - do you mean with your Broadband or with your ISP/Hosting.

ISP problems, big ISP problems - they had a major outage over three states a few weeks ago and our connection has never been restored to the same standards, it’s an ongoing, tiresome and stressful battle with them. Not the hosting company - they are brilliant, extremely helpful.

I am glad to hear that this turned out not to be a FW problem - upload issues don’t tend to be (other than the ones that are solved by toggling between passive and non-passive).

But please change your file/folder naming to remove those illegal characters as they will trip up Browsers and Operating systems that are less forgiving.

Okay, done - commas removed - thanks for your vigilance Dave! Appreciate your help. I will have to do this on all the other sites now too!
