[Pro] Pop up page/window

Trying to learn this program as I am making a huge site with Pro 5. I would like for a text link to then pop up a little 300 px by 220 px window that gives additional information and I am having no luck making this work out.

I have made a separate page for this pop up and told the inspector to do a size of 300 x 220. And I have tried several different combinations after that to make this page appear on its own and at its special size.

No matter what I do, the new page is the same as all the rest. An example can be found at http://st-petersburg-ramada-inn-hotel-motel-wedding-reception-banquets.com/Florida-Gulf-Coast-Beaches/Weddings-Receptions-Banquets/Ramada-St-Pete-Hotel-Gulf-Coast/Amenities-Ramada-St-Pete/amenities-ramada-st-pete.html

Then look for the “pet friendly” link. I would love for that “page” to be just a little info page of 300x220 pixels.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any and all help,

Robert

Rather than creating a separate page use Target Show/Hide Layer.

Create a layered item - in your case a box with the text and the pet as a background layer.

Apply the Target show/hide layer action to it and set for initially hidden set the target group and the target # and position it where you want it to appear on your page.

Apply a rollover action to your linked text with parameters Mouseover:items
and Slave group and # to match those set in the previous action.

The result on the page will be a box appearing with the info that you want when the text is moused over - no extra pages required.

Thanks David!

I will be trying this later tonight. Have not tried doing anything like what you have laid out for me, so I might have a question later. Thanks again,

Use ‘Spawn Ne Window’ action.
See the parameters in the action pallet when you apply it to a selected item
or text. You can now do what you want.
hope this helps

Use ‘Spawn New Window’ action.

‘Text link to new window’ action?

Yes these are both valid ways of achieving what you want - have a look at http://www.deltadzine.net/test/ramada.html for a quick and dirty example of the Target Show/Hide Layer in action

Wow! That was really cool for you to do this example page!

The show Target/hide layer idea is a better one for this case than bringing up a new page like I was asking for and it is nice to see an example for that and what I asked for.

Though I need to learn a lot more about the “actions”, I think your idea for just an image and text to appear looks better.

Now to make this happen on my own.

Wish me luck,

Robert

"Rather than creating a separate page use Target Show/Hide Layer.

I am trying to do this, but can not figure out how. I have searched through the Freeway 5 PDF manual, but nothing comes up for “layered item” and only one thing comes up under the search of “layered” and it does not apply.

What is the trick to making this “layered item” and what would be the proper “name” so I can research it?

I am making a HTML box to the proper size and I have no means of getting a background image in it.

I’m still a rookie with this software!

Thanks,

“Have you tried the ‘Text link to new window’ action?”

I have tried to find it, but no luck. I highlight the text that I want to be the link and I can not find this option under the actions, nor the other action, “Spawn New Window”.

How is this done?

This has got to be the oddest “WYSIWYG” program I have ever tried using. Very odd and difficult to figure out anything beyond the basics.

Thanks,

Robert

Yea! Found the “Text Link to New Window” in the Freeway PDF manual and got that figured out.

Now how do I make the text match the rest of the text around it? It is a size or two too small. That’s not acceptable and it must match all the rest of the text.

Why does something as simple as opening another page in a different size have to be so darn difficult in Freeway? Between me trying to figure this out before asking the forum and still trying to make this work, I have around three plus hours in what was maybe 30 seconds to do in GoLive. Honestly.

If it is just opening another page, what is the big deal that requires an “action”? I do not get this program and it is so darn frustrating at times.

Thanks,

Robert

You’ll find it in the ‘Insert’ menu.

Thanks Paul, I found it in the manual. But how do I get the correct font size?

Just select it with the run of text it is in and apply styles as desired.

If it is on its own then add a space before and after so as to be able to
style it.

hope this helps

I have tried to find it, but no luck. I highlight the text that I
want to be the link and I can not find this option under the
actions, nor the other action, “Spawn New Window”.

There is a limitation of the Actions process; these things can be
attached to objects… but a string of text is itself not an object.

What you need to do is this:

Click INTO the text and choose Insert > Action Item > Text Link to New Window.

This inserts an action ‘object’ into the text flow. Click this
(selected as an object) and look in the Actions palette. You put the
text you want it to be in there, plus whatever link options you’re
after.

I’m afraid you won’t see your text in the design layout view, only in
previews. (And then only if you remember to pick a page target for
the link.) This is because except in very specific cases actions are
processed during page publishing. Make the object roughly the length
that the text would be to give yourself a fair idea of how the text
will flow.

This has got to be the oddest “WYSIWYG” program I have ever tried
using. Very odd and difficult to figure out anything beyond the
basics.

Frankly, I think you’re still trying to use Freeway as if it was a
rather different kind of app. Yes, there are things about it, actions
in particular, that should be more WYSIWYG, but that is a current and
easily-understood limitation of what is basically an external and
user-extensible plugin features interface.

I agree that things like that are a bit odd. But I’ve taught this app
to many different kinds of people and I can’t agree that this stuff
is difficult. I tell you what, if you’re ever passing through London
I’ll give you a few hours of one-on-one Freeway time. (The least I
can do after picking holes in your posts!

Best of luck! Keep asking for help, but do keep remembering that
Freeway ain’t like other web apps as well; it is far more like
industry-standard DTP apps.

There is a little more to it than this though; it isn’t “just opening
another page”, it is opening a fresh browser window with specific
attributes. If you just want to open a new browser window make a
regular link and give it a custom target.

Thanks for all the help everyone!!!

I DO APPRECIATE IT!

Eventually I’ll get the hang of this. It is just frustrating when you are behind the eight-ball on time and you’re still learning the program. I have a month in this project and easily, I have another month to go.

Lucky for me, the hotel really likes what I am trying to pull off for them and they are getting the website in trade out.

Please bear with me as I keep asking questions.

I will follow the directions in these new threads later this evening when I get back from shooting Tarpon Springs, Florida. Sponging capital of the USA.

Hi Robert

Sorry I couldn’t get back to you about this earlier

I am trying to do this, but can not figure out how. I have searched through the Freeway 5 PDF manual, but nothing comes up for “layered item” and only one thing comes up under the search of “layered” and it does not apply.

What is the trick to making this “layered item” and what would be the proper “name” so I can research it?

In FW Pro any item on the page whether in an HTML or Graphic box can be a layered item.

With an item selected on the page look in the inspector palette - The first Tab in the HTML inspector, in the section Properties has a number of check boxes. Under the Title box is the Layer checkbox - make sure that it has a tick inside it after you have created an HTML box and inserted your “The Ramada St. Pete Hotel is a pet friendly hotel. Please announce that you have…” text

Then with the HTML box selected if you click on the Paintbrush icon in the inspector you will see a section for Background. Change the color to one of your choice and use the image one to select your cat picture. I then added a border to the box and set the ‘Padding’ to keep the text away from the sides.

Apply the Target show/hide layer action to the HTML box and in the action inspector set for initially hidden set the target group and the target # and position it where you want it to appear on your page.

Click in the run of text where you want your ‘Pet Friendly’ link to appear and insert the Text Rollover action (Insert>Action Item>Text Rollover)

Set the parameters in the Action inspector - Text: ‘Pet Friendly’ and Slave group and # to match those set in the previous action.

I have also added Walters CSS3 Corners and CSS3 Shadow actions to the pop up HTML box to give it a bit more zing.

If you need more help just shout.
