[Pro] Preventing mp3 files from being downloaded

I am building a site for a session musician who wants to put all his music on the site for people to hear. I am using Yahoo web player to do this which simply looks for any link to an mp3 file and wraps them in a player, creating a playlist.

I have strongly recommended that he only puts snippets of his music rather than full tracks because I am pretty sure I know the answer to this question but: is there any way to prevent download of the file on the page in the same way that image guardian can prevent right-clicking?

Alternatively, does anyone know a non-flash MP3 player that’s easily integrated into a freeway page?

Many thanks

Mark

I’m afraid that nothing can make an MP3 file (inherently playable by any device) non-downloadable. In order to play it, your browser must first download it. It will be in the cache even if it isn’t literally downloaded to the desktop or somewhere immediately browse-able.

Have you given SoundCloud a try? They have a lovely player that is a one-line JavaScript drop-in. The downside of this is that you have to upload your files to their server, and there may be things about their terms of service that put you off. Also, they are venture capital-funded, and thus may go out of business at any time when the money puddle dries up. (They have no sustainable business model as far as I can see.)

Thanks for that Walter. That’s exactly what I thought the answer would be. Yes, the client does have a sound loud account and we have an embedded feed on the site but he is also a producer and wants to show other artists track that he has produced/played on so he thinks it may be a bit cheeky to add these to soundcloud.

Thanks for confirming this I will have to persuade him to go down the 30 sec snippet route.
