[Pro] Preview - Purpose of the 'Images' Button

What is the real purpose of the “Images” button within Freeway’s Preview? I cannot imagine any other practical use other than to view ALT text. And yet, quite surprisingly, I cannot see any ALT text at all when I click that button to hide the images!

Try it yourself:

  1. New document.

  2. Sketch a graphic box, then give it a color (so you can see it) and then add some ALT text via the Inspector.

  3. Preview

  4. Click the ‘Images’ button at the top of the window.

  5. Your graphic vanishes but does NOT show you the ALT text.

If there is a trick to getting the ALT text to show, I would appreciate hearing how it is done.

Many thanks,

James Wages

I think you’ve pointed out in the past that Safari (WebKit) doesn’t
show the ALT text when the images are disabled. Freeway uses WebKit as
the rendering engine for the Preview mode. Therefore Freeway is
hamstrung by Apple’s design decision.

Thank you for reminding me about that severe limitation, Walter.

But to be completely honest with you, as someone who uses ALT text for accessibility reasons and in light of even Safari 4 not displaying ALT text, it seems rather silly to leave things “as they are now.”

Is there really nothing that can be done to resolve the problem, in spite of brain-dead Webkit? We often love to bash IE 6, but the fact is that even a loathsome browser like that can display the basics like ALT text!

(And yes, I am well aware that Previewing in FireFox is a “workaround”. But that is not desirable as FW’s Preview allows you to quickly Preview one page at a time without having to build the entire site over and over.)
