[Pro] Pro 5 and .Mac

I’m finding it difficult to manage my site from both my desktop and my laptop. Each time I update the site from one or the other computer, I get a rebuild. Even if I revise only a single text line and upload–and Freeway doesn’t tell me it is a rebuild–when it uploads to .Mac from iDisk it loads it like a rebuild. My website is still on a .mac address.

This is eating up a lot of time.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

You are always going to have problems working this way - FW checks to see what files have changed (date/time) and replaces as necessary. Working from 2 machines each machine cannot check date/time stamps from the other so assumes the worst and reloads it all. Or at least that is my understanding of it.

How do you keep the 2 FW files and site folders synced?

This is more a workflow issue I think.

I was thinking about using Drop Box http://www.getdropbox.com/ and loading
the FW file from there. I sync a couple of important FW sites to my Drop
Box account and hope I can work from that file in the cloud to my laptop to
keep them in sync…would that work do you think?

I keep my Freeway masters in an iDisk Documents folder. If I update the master at home, once sync’d, my master is the same at work–and it is the same. It seems strange that Freeway tells me it has to overwrite files belonging to another site.

What is stranger still is that when I update a single page of the site, iDisk uploads all of the pages of the site. One of the pages has a large mov. file and so the upload takes a long time. I seem to remember Freeway4 and iDisk only updating files that had been altered. Perhaps my memory is skewed.

Thanks for the feedback and any further suggestions.

It would work, but it would probably be pretty slow. One of the nice
things about iDisk is the local cache. Once the file updates locally,
you really are working on it in real time – not cloud time.

In order to make this exercise work correctly for you and for Freeway,
you will need to archive the entire project folder – especially
including the site folder where you publish locally, and probably the
external resources, too – and then only ever open the “cloud” version
of this project. Then Freeway will recognize the site as its own, and
not try to overwrite everything each time you publish.

Here at my office, I have a large-ish Xserve and Xserve RAID, and I
open and publish everything off the network. So if I use my laptop or
my desktop, it doesn’t matter at all – there’s only ever one version
of the file. This works fine over gigabit Ethernet, since that’s
nearly as fast as locally-attached storage. But over the iDisk cloud?
I doubt it would be a very pleasant experience to work that way.

All I can say is try it, see if the much-vaunted cacheing works as it
says on the tin.

I have the same problem. My site is 6 pages, and the pages have links to small PDF or JPEG files for client review.

When I Save, Publish, and Upload FW uploads the entire site. Pages and linked files. It takes quite a long time. About 100 files all together.

.mac or mobile me is slow anyway, but to re-do the site each time just makes it unworkable. What I’ve been doing is Publish then Quit, go to the local folder, find the new files and upload manually to .mac. It’s not a good work flow.
