[Pro] Problems with uploading using FTP in 5.5 Pro

I am having problems with the FTP on version 5.5 and have not yet managed to successfully upload files to a site I created a couple of days ago for a friend, so I was forced to upload the files manually using Yummy FTP. Every time it starts and says it is comparing files but then times out.

I’ve checked the permissions and ownership of the /web folder where the files are uploaded and it looks the same as all my other sites, so I am a bit perplexed. In the past I have always been able to upload other sites using previous versions of Freeway to the same server. It’s probably some error at my end, but not immediately obvious by any means.

On a side note, for anybody who is curious I used the relative page layout action on this site at http://www.connexionsitaly.com

Have you at any point uploaded using FW’s built in facility to this site. Either with 5.5 or another version?

No it’s a brand new site. I have uploaded to other sites though on the same server using Freeway 5.

I think I am close to finding the solution for this problem after having checked again on the permissions and ownership via root using Yummy FTP, but something is still not quite right. Although the web folder and group was correct with permissions set at 710 I later discovered that the files inside had both owner and group listed as root with permissions set at 644. I have changed the owner and group to the correct settings now.

This setup matches the other sites on the server where I have managed to upload with previous versions of Freeway. When I try to upload with this site however using 5.5 all I get is a message saying that it is comparing files and then eventually times out so I am still investigating to see what may be causing the problem.

As a further test I just took a site that was built originally with a previous version of Freeway and made a small change before saving and uploading with 5.5, which went up without a hitch. In the FTP log for this new site that is causing problems it seemed to be mentioning the IP number of the previous server where the old version of the site was hosted, which doesn’t make much sense. In the FTP settings it references the domain rather than the IP number and since the site is live I don’t see how this can be a propagation issue.

Hi Ashley,

Have you tried changing the FTP Mode option to Passive and Non-Passive?

Joe

You’ve just cracked the problem Joe, but it may have highlighted something else in Freeway. I had the mode set to automatic and it became blocked every time. When I set it to passive it uploaded instantly. I went back to check on the other site, which had originally been created with an older version of Freeway and that was set on passive mode.

Thanks for letting me know Ashley, for some reason Automatic FTP Mode (which should try non-passive and then fall back to passive) is timing out for some people.

Would it be of any use for you to see the logs?

Yes please, I don’t think the upload gets as far as writing to the logs but the more info we have the better.

Thanks,

Joe

First. Sorry for my English

I also have big problems with the upload. Automatic and Non-Passive not work. With Passive All works to change only one word needs FW 5.5 whole 19 minutes. A similar amendment to 5.4.2 takes just 40 seconds. I can only hope that Softpress get this problem in control.

I’ve been using FTP to connect to sites and upload folders on the internet regularly now for 8 years and in all that time I can only remember one server that would only work in active mode and that was a stock photo library. All the others have been in passive mode but Softpress must have their reasons for having added this feature. Your situation sounds particularly bad though Arthur and perhaps it would help Softpress if you could supply them with more information.

Hi Ashley

Softpress knows the problem of automatic and non-passiv already, the problem with the duration reported today or tomorrow morning.

I sent a week ago, a report to Softpress. They want to look after that was the answer. Unfortunately, to date no further notice. I had to change today only a framework, needed to Freeway 41 minutes, it has been uploaded most of the pictures again. 'll Probably use up the final remedy the error Cyberduck to transfer. When the news of Softpress comes, I’ll publish it here.
