[Pro] Questions about links?

I’m sure this is a very subjective question, but is it possible to have too many links on a webpage? I have one page on a client website that talks about the history of my client’s company. I have about 7 links to other websites that provide more detail on the name or event referenced?

Also, is it considered bad form to have the active link and visited link color the same? I know it’s not about me, but I really hate it when my website becomes a kaleidoscope of colors due to active and visited links.

Any thoughts on this?

I dont think there is any negative impact by having multiple outbound links.

What would be good was if you could get those linked sites to reciprocate.

Thanks Dave. What about the second part of my question. Any thoughts on that?

Link colours are subjective - Google is colour blind.

As to your visitors - they probably wont notice.

Remember the active colour is only evident at the point of clicking.

There are other ways to give users information about what links do. I am
resurrecting an ancient tutorial I did about Link Icons.

This was done with a previous version of Freeway, so exercise caution if
you download.

So, neither of you see any issues with having the same color for both active and visited links?

Just so you know, and I hope this doesn’t make your heads get too big, both of you are a huge influence on me and is why I now design websites with links that don’t open up new windows.

Thanks RM.

The existence of the :active and :visited styling options comes from a
desire to have the user be in control of their experience. Lots of links
can be confusing, for some the web itself is a confusing experience. By
giving the user a visual cue that they’ve been somewhere before you are
being helpful. In the same way, a descriptive anchor title helps the
hovering user know more about what to expect from a link. All these things
are helpful, and they are all about user experience, which you can decide
how much you want to influence.

As a designer, I think it’s fair to ask whether purple says “already been
there”. I always felt a gray color said that better. However, most of the
time I just focus on the regular link and hover states.
