Then what about reducing the bit rate and resaving to reduce the file size to ensure faster page load.

50MB is absolutely and unarguably unworkable. Forget that option.
Frankly, if the Firefox developers want to shoot themselves in the foot to make a political point that’s up to them - but it could be the start of the long goodnight for the software. The vast majority of users don’t care for such stuff, they just want a browser that works as expected.

Amadeus – a free open-source audio editor – has some great tools for reducing bit depth and exporting in various formats.
On a recent site where I wanted to use the HTML5 audio tag, I had to make a conversion script that ran on the server, took the MP3 the client uploaded, converted it to OGG, and then created a “stacked” set of source elements within the audio tag. They were set up in the following order, so the browser could pick the one that worked for it:
Thankfully, the way that the HTML5 audio tag was designed, only one of these files will be downloaded at all. The first one that the browser knows what to do with will be loaded and the rest will be skipped. It’s such a great design in so many ways. I can’t wait until it’s more widely used.

I agree 50MB is impractical in most cases but that being said it also depends somewhat on your target audience. I have a client site with dozens of QT videos a few of which are in the 50MB-80MB range though even these load/play pretty quickly in most cases. Part of the reason for this is because the target audience is pretty specialized, mainly the advertising and entertainment industry, and they’re typically on very fast connections so quality is a bigger concern than large file sizes. Obviously this is atypical of most sites but my point is large files can work fine without the user-experience taking a hit.

is that the player now plays in Firefox!!
I didn’t have the problem of the player not appearing - it was just that it didn’t appear until the whole file had loaded.

Open a new GB file
After you have given it a name and a location then delete whatever tracks are already in there.
Drag your mp3 from the finder into the middle section to import it.
Share>Export Song to Disk
Choose your Compression method and Quality (Good should be fine) and you will see an estimated file size.
Export - Done
