[Pro] Quicktime question mark

Hi. Newbie here. Please be gentle. I have just created a single web page that contains two mp4 video windows. I created the windows as html and imported the two separate video files as per the book. I also switched off autoplay on each and included the quicktime controller. I previewed the page in Freeway and in Safari. All perfect. I then saved the site and uploaded it to my space using Cyberduck FTP app. When I view the site online the page loads but the video windows have a white question mark in each, no videos. What is going on? Thanks in advance.

Heh. Why? There is an FTP feature built into Freeway! And it will
manage files for you so that you don’t need to worry about clearing
out the older files - or accidentally not uploading something or
putting it in the wrong place. (Which will be what’s happened here.)

No biggie, you can use your own FTP app if you prefer, but try the
one in Freeway for a bit first.

Thanks for the reply. I used Cyberduck because I know it. I don’t know Freeway yet. I’ve checked and all the site files are up there in my webspace. An exact mirror. But I will have a look at the Freeway upload facility just to prove a point. I was more concerned that I’d done something wrong or missed a stage in the page build. Thanks again.

No, you can relax on that front; if the preview in Safari or in
Freeway works then it is fine.

The only possible explanation is that the movie isn’t where it should
be on the server or perhaps got mangled so it isn’t in the state it
should be. Sometimes hosting services with small file storage
capacities don’t report ‘site full’ situations properly, so your
movie might just not be a complete file on the remote server?

A quick extra bit of info in case it helps…

It is recommended that people don’t go delving into the Site folder -
at least, not unless they really know how things work. Freeway makes,
deletes and remakes files in there as it sees fit in order to keep
the files fresh and trim. Anything you add to that folder yourself
will not be uploaded by Freeway, but anything that it put in there
through being a part of your site layout in Freeway will be uploaded,
kept up to date, and deleted if no longer in use in your pages.

Do feel free to upload with CyberDuck. But first find out what went
wrong. And second, try out Freeway’s Upload feature so you can make a
fully-informed choice.

Oh, and third, have fun. This stuff shouldn’t be stressful.

Ok. I have just uploaded the site through Freeway. Site still shows quicktime windows with white question marks in. I know it is the newer upload as I changed some text and made one of the videos autoplay. Previews show this but the website doesn’t. Any more ideas? Thanks again.

UPDATE!

I just visited my site in Firefox and guess what-It Works!

I did wonder about this so I did clear the cache and relaunched safari but with no luck. Maybe tomorrow it’ll work, you know how these things go sometimes;-)

Thanks for your help. Good to know when you start new with an app that the supports there when you need it. Cheers

At this point I’ll sing the regular Freewaytalk chorus… got a URL
so we can see?

Yeah. No probs.

I did get Safari to work about an hour ago, somehow. Just revisited the site now and we’re back to question marks. Firefox still playing perfectly.

Okay, I just checked it in Firefox and…

Those movies are way too big for comfortable web delivery. My
network download speed was pegged at almost 800KB/sec for over half a
minute before anything other than the QuickTime logo was shown.

The second movie doesn’t show anything other than white, although the
sound does play. When I download it (13.7MB by the way) it works.
Odd. I suspect the video encoding, which appears to be “JVT/AVC”.
Transcode it to something else; h.264 is a good modern choice.

Although, frankly, I’d turn to Vimeo instead. Set up a free account
on http://www.vimeo.com/ and upload your videos. Use the embedding
code in markup item boxes in your Freeway page. Movies play using the
Flash player. Job done.

Thanks again. They are H.264. I know. I made them. I’m not after web delivery as such. I’m trying to let my client see them. Their in house mail delivery will not accept attachments of any kind!
I’ve asked a colleague to look at them and he is reporting no problems on Mac or PC. I appreciate your comments and normally I would make them smaller but they are originally from an HD video edit and my client wants hi-res all the way. I also cannot put them in the public domain (vimeo/youtube etc) In fact I’m just reading about Freeways ability to do linked file downloads. Maybe this would be a better choice. I will investigate further.
ps Had a nose round your site. Great work. Just looked at the G20 protest panorama. Love the girl in the B&W hooped top holding a TLR (looks like a Mamiya) That takes me back. Also did you create the site with Freeway?

I just tired it on my iMac with OS 10.6.2 and Safari and it didn’t work. Nothing but quicktime logos.

A bit of a mystery then. Firefox is handling it all well and good as far as I can see. My colleague even managed it ok on his dreaded PC running IE. It’s only a temporary page for now but it’s my first play with Freeway. I’ve done it out of necessity. I never like working like that. Could I ask George, did you get quicktime logos without the question marks?

Hi Craig,
Try removing the spaces in the video file names;
“Redrow DVD edit v1.mp4” for example.
It may not remedy the problem you are having but it will certainly
eliminate one possible cause.
Regards,
Tim.
