[Pro] Rebuilding a site

I need advice on restructuring a site.

Basically I need to eliminate 5 pages and replace them with just one containing most, but not all of the content of those pages ( image gallery ). Considering that those 5 pages will be permanently removed, my plan would be:

  1. removing them from Google search,
  2. placing an 404 message re-directing to the new page
  3. submitting an updated sitemap.

Many thanks in advance,

VGP

2 placing an 404 message re-directing to the new page

This is called a 301 redirect and is done in your htaccess file

David,

Nice of you to reply.

I should have been more precise: “re-directing with 404” makes us think of 301.
I was thinking of using 404 for the the pages removed permanently ( with the option of sending the visitor to the new page), instead of 301.
I wander what the difference would make for the search engines.
Never done this before and I am afraid of making a mess.

Thank you,

David is correct. 404 says to the search engines (and the human visitors) “This is gone, and I don’t know where it is.” It’s final, definitive, and in Google’s case, means “stop looking and never come back”. You’re gone from the index, which is exactly what you don’t want.

301 says “This thing, which used to be here, is now there, and will remain there always.” It transfers whatever Google-juice you may have stockpiled in the old URL to the new URL, and stops Google from looking in the old (wrong) place.
