[Pro] Redirect urls

Hi All,

I have a number of urls that Google has indexed in the past but because the structure of the site has changed they are now no longer valid. Is there a way to redirect visitors to the new url, possibly using the .htaccess file on the server. (the old url is first)

http://www.cotswoldengineeringsupplies.co.uk/Brass%20Compression%20Fittings/brassintroduction.html

http://www.cotswoldengineeringsupplies.co.uk/Wade%20Brass%20Compression%20Fittings/index.php

Whilst developing the new site I put the new version in a folder called 2009-dev that Google indexed before I could upload a robots.txt file to stop indexing. Some of the pages from that directory come up in Google searches, is there a way to redirect visitors to the correct page by stripping out the 2009-dev part of the url?

I have a custom 404 page not found error page (click on the first url to view it!), which has the option to click and go to the site, but it would be preferable if this was transparent to the visitor.

Would uploading a sitemap to Gooigle help with the deletion of old indexed pages?

Any thoughts will be gratefully received.

Regards

Steve.

There’s info on doing precisely this at

I hope it helps!

Hi Keith,

Thanks for the link, yes that’s what I thought I could do.
I’ll have a look later, (on another site now trying to get to grips
with inline box model… we know how to have fun!!)

Regards,
Steve.
