[Pro] resolution?

Hi all,

I am still building my site and all pages have a width of 1100pxls.

I know I am not providing enough info to answer this question but as I start to predict a problem when I finish the site,

my question is…

Will my site being 1100 wide be a problem to see perfectly on our school monitor’s which are a resolution of 1024 x 768?

(I started to build it with Relative Page Layout put on all pages, but have since taken it off),

Thanks for beginning to help on this

Barry

Remember that a monitor with a resolution of 1024 has also side/scroll bars etc which reduce the visible area so it is recommended that you reduce your FW page to 960px to allow for them.

Dave

i really cannot change the width because of the content.

What will happen to the site on these monitors?

Will everything get pushed around (graphics)?

The page width is the first thing that you should have decided. Unless you were doing a flexible layout - especially as you knew your target audience’s monitor size!

Horizontal scroll bars.

I hope I am not all messed up now.

My target is more than my students. That is my problem.

My school uses small monitors but when they leave school of course their computers change to different sizes.

How do I do a flexible layout???

You should be aiming for the lowest common denominator - being a Maths guy you know all about those!

One way is to size sections of your page using %s but you would need an inline layout to get this to work properly - the RPL action goes a long way towards doing that for you.

As to the Use Master Settings, Use Master Content question

Use master settings - means that the child item will use the positioning etc. of the master item while Use Master Content means the similar thing re the content

For example a graphic item on a Master page that is 200px from the top and 100px from the left will be positioned in the same place on the child page if use Master Settings is checked. If Use Master Content is checked as well then the picture/photo in that graphic will be the same on the child page too. If unchecked it could have a different picture content.

Similarly an HTML item with a border and a colour on the Master with Use Master Settings checked will have the same border and colour but if Use Master Content is un checked then the text content can differ from the Master page.

Dave you said…

  1. Right now I have no RPL action being used and width of 1100

  2. I do not know if my pages are fixed but I imagine it is.

  3. I am building the site so I do not want to go much further if I am wrong, so should I put the RPL action on all the pages and change sizing to 100%?

  4. Can you explain again what kind of layoiut I have now vs. inline layout and will things get messed up?

I feel like I am going backwards with my FW learning curve.

  1. How do I change the size to 100%?

thanks much,

Barry

Unless you have done anything otherwise then it is fixed.

RPL only works on pages that consist of all layered items. Are all your items layers?

Can you explain again what kind of layout I have now

No - not without seeing it. It wont be inline - but the RPL action can take care of that.

How do I change the size to 100%?

You dont - but you may want to change parts to different %s ie one column 60% another 40% (in a 2 column layout)

Alternatively you leave the whole thing as it is just now at 1100px and just test with a 960px wide browser window and see how it looks - especially on a PC running Exploder.

You really need to get your site onto a live server for testing and this is not difficult to do.

How did you upload your previous site? If you used an FTP app like Cyberduck then all you need do is create a new folder on your existing site at www.thehoffs-site.com/test and set FW to upload into that by putting www.thehoffs-site.com in the Server box and /test in the Directory box of the Upload section of File>Document Setup

Or just FTP the contents of your site folder into that test folder.

Yes Dave I am using a standalone FTP (CuteFTP). WOuld it be best to get it (semi) live while I am building to test these things out and if I had to send you a link to see, etc???

Would it be possible to eventually get rid of CUTE Ftp and when finished making it do the whole uploading each time through FW? Is this what you do?

Will doing this “test” method you mention above serve any risks to copying over my current site (like index file, etc)?

thanks,

Yes. The same for any issue you have while building - if we can see the live site we can read the underlying code and see where you are going wrong.

Certainly. It makes it far easier if you use FW’s built-in FTP to keep all files updated. FW only updates changed files.

Nope. Use Cute to create that ‘test’ folder and then only change anything within that test folder and you can’t go wrong.

By all means use Cute to transfer the contents of the FW site folder into the test folder until you are ready with the new site then you can get FW to take over the whole process.

More importantly you can test using one of the Schools computers!

to be honest- the whole Cute FTP and FW site folder stuff scares me and is not easy for me…

I was able to open CUTE FTP and made a new folder called FWtest. It is empty now of course.

how do I get things into this folder? what should be moved there?

How will I even be able to see it live because I do not know the address after www.Hoffsite.com/

sorry- this is very very frustrating right now. Feel free to not even answer.

i think I am just better off- leaving everything as is, creating it the best I can, then uploading and replacing the old with new, then spending the next year fixing it.

The address will be www.Hoffsite.com/FWtest

The same way you uploaded your original site. Copy the contents of your FW site into the FWtest folder on the server.

No reason to be wary - as long as you stick to ONLY changing the contents of the FWtest folder you will be fine.

I really do think I get it, but if I have so much in my new website’s folder (images, pdfs, movies, site folder, audio, Hoffsite.freeway, Hoffsite.fwbackup)

am I supposed to copy and paste every single thing into this TEST FOLDER?

and if so,

then every time I make a change to my Freeway file (as I am building it), won;t I have to copy just about everything again?

This could get crazy and confusing???

Barry

It is ONLY the contents of the Site folder which is shown when you click on File>Document Setup under the Document Tab under where it says the width and height settings it will tell you: Site Folder…

Ah- so just copy my FW site folder into the TEST folder.

Bring the test folder over in my CUTE FTP and when I go to www.Hoffsite.com/FWtest it should show the site…

then if I make any change to my FW file, I have to recopy the site folder into my test folder again and then bring it over in the FTP?

followed all but did not work.

I copied SITE folder into a new folder in CUTE FTP called FWtest.
I dragged the new FWtest folder over in my FTP program.

I went to my site name www.H—.com/FWtest and
error came up

“DIRECTORY HAS NO INDEX FILE”

i think it has something to do with my new index.html being tucked away in the FWtest folder?

i normally have my index.htm file outside any folder.

Have you actually got an index.html file - check the file name of your “Home” page - you may have changed it so that it doesn’t say index.html any more.

As long as the index.html page is within the FWtest folder (and not in a sub folder) then it will work. Unless (like some servers) it should be set as home.html. Check the file name of your existing site to see.
