[Pro] scrolling photos

I have just published a new website with scrolling photos, which work fine in Safari and Chrome but not in Firefox. Yet on another website that I made and maintain it’s works perfectly well. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks Tim,

It’s here:

www.lynettegginsdesign.com.au

I’m also having a lot of trouble trying to upload the updated version of this site using Filezilla which is what the client uses as the host company will not give out the information required for the directory name.

kind regards
Elizabeth

trouble trying to upload the updated version of this site using Filezilla

If you have enough information to use Filezilla you have enough to use FW’s built in FTP

You have repeated javascript errors which is probably upsetting FF - may be related to the file upload issue.

Unsafe JavaScript attempt to access frame with URL http://www.lynettegginsdesign.com.au/ from frame with URL http://users.tpg.com.au/egginsl/index.html.

David - I would love to use Freeway’s built-in FTP - I use all the time for my own sites and others but it will not work for this other one. It’s driving me nuts and wasting so much time!

Hi Elizabeth,
The problem Dave mentioned stems from the fact that you have a frameset holding the site. The frameset is here;
http://www.lynettegginsdesign.com.au/
but the actual site is here;
http://users.tpg.com.au/egginsl/index.html

Using framesets like this to hold a site is very common and is often seen as a first option for a lot of domain registrars simply because it is easy to set up. Unfortunately it also comes at the expense of usability and good site SEO. With a frameset in place pages are hard to bookmark and print and search engines may have problems deciding on which server the content actually lives.

If you can I would recommend doing away with the frameset and associating the domain directly with the site itself.

Now with all of that out of the way, to fix your issues in Firefox. Select the animated image and open the Actions palette (Window > Actions) and change the setting “Find Targets” from “top” to “this”. This should stop Firefox getting upset about the frameset.
Regards,
Tim.

I think the problem is that the page appears to be accessing code from another domain - even though the domains are technically the same.

That is why I am suggesting that you get the upload sorted so all references are to the same domain.

One of the guys here (or Softpress Support) can help with your upload issue if you want to share what access details you are using to FTP - just DONT post them publicly.

Wow, Dave, I’m impressed with your answer! Yes, there is a problem with the domain as the ISP is claiming that they don’t actually host the site another company does, but my friend and colleague did not know of this other company until the other day when she tried to find out the directory name so I could upload the site for her. I guess this is something she is going to have to sort out with her ISP. Could this also be the problem with the php form not working properly? I cannot see what is wrong with it as it follows the exact same format that I have built for six other forms and two other websites.

Thanks for the tip, but I would not reveal any codes or passwords here.

regards
Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth,
It looks like the server either doesn’t support PHP or that the feature is switched off. It looks like the site is hosted on some free space over on the TPG servers (http://www.tpg.com.au/) so I’d imagine that PHP isn’t available.

Tim.

Hi Tim

Thanks for your reply. I have made that simple change for the pics and in the preview on Firefox that all look fine now.

The second URL you mentioned is how I have to upload it (according to TPG and my colleague) even though I have stressed that it’s not they way it should be done and all I need is the directory name to upload it from the Freeway FTP. Do you have any suggestions? I’m not tech minded so just don’t know where to look.

Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth,
The issues you are having with the frameset and the lack of PHP support on the server make me think that they will need to pay for a proper hosting account rather than using their free web space. Hosting is dirt cheap these days and trying to step around the issues created by using a free account can cause more work in the long run. I generally think that if you are running a business (however small) you should be investing in real web hosting.

There are a number of people here on FreewayTalk that offer Freeway-friendly hosting. I won’t list them as I’m sure I’ll offend the ones I’ve forgotten about but I’m sure they will add their voices here.

Your client needs to create a new hosting account, move or redirect the domain name to the new hosting provider’s servers and finally you’ll need to upload your Freeway site to their FTP space. It’s a bit more work for you but it really is the right thing to do.
Regards,
Tim.

Hi Elizabeth,
Web space is often tagged on a freebie for broadband access, email accounts and sometimes even mobile phone contracts. I’ve various ‘free’ accounts like this and they are all limited in some form or other. They tend to be fine for hosting static (regular HTML) sites, test pages or downloads but for anything else you’ll need to look elsewhere.
Regards,
Tim.

I will let her know this - yes, it has cost me a lot of extra time, many, many hours as a friend/colleague helping another friend/colleague. Interestingly I don’t have this trouble with my paid and other client’s paid domain hosting.

Thank you for your help and advice,
regards
Elizabeth
