[Pro] Setting up MAMP?

I’m thinking about setting up MAMP on my Mac. Is there anyway I can setup MAMP so it uses its own dedicated hard drive? I have four on my Mac Pro.

I’m probably going to go with the Pro version so if anyone has any discount coupon codes that would be good to.

It’s not that difficult to set up without MAMP. The main thing it
downloads is MySQL, which is free anyway. Your Mac has Apache and PHP
already. It just needs a couple of config file edits once you’ve got
MySQL downloaded and running.

Thanks David, I appreciate your advice.

However, after having wrestled this past week with Perch and PHP coding, I’d prefer something that’s plug-in-play with little or no setup or configuration from me.

Will MAMP do that for me? Also, can I setup MAMP so it uses a specific drive as the server?

I’ve just tried this and it works perfectly.

  1. Create your site folder on your external (or non boot) drive
  2. Create an alias of it File > Make Alias
  3. Drag the alias into your htdocs folder /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/

I’m also using VirtualHostX (VirtualHostX – retina studio) which allows me to associate a domain name to my local development sites. For example I can enter my-local-test-site.web or project-x.web and have the correct site load directly through MAMP. MAMP Pro also offers virtual host support although I’ve been happy with the regular MAMP and VirtualHostX for a while now.

What is great about MAMP is that you can run it just like any other application to start and stop your local servers whenever you like. Installing a server setup on the Mac isn’t as scary as it used to be (certainly for new web designers) but MAMP makes the process super easy.

Tim.

What kind of permissions or firewall settings do you have to make to enable this?

None at all. These domains are all mapped to local sites within your MAMP setup.

Tim,

Why create the site folder on an external drive and then create an alias? When using MAMP I put my Freeway files into a project folder and put that folder directly into MAMP/htdocs. Is this wrong and likely to lead to tears?

Hi Richard,
I suggested using an alias because Kelly (RavenManiac) wanted to place the site files on a dedicated drive. I agree that normally I’d place the site files directly into the htdocs folder or in a subfolder.

Tim.
