[Pro] Simple Site Search: Score Variable

I’ve set up my site with SSS, and everything seems to work fine. But I would like to change the score given to certain pages in the search results. I understand that each page starts with a “5” and goes up or down from there, depending on what the user is searching for. Then the results are output in descending score order. I want some pages to always get an advantage in the scoring, and some to always have a disadvantage. Any ideas on how to do that? Perhaps a meta tag?

Hi Robert,
Here’s how the Action works internally to provide the search functionality. Once you understand this you may be able to influence the order of the results (more of that a bit later).

The Action scrapes data from your Freeway site including the page name, any meta data for the page, the page path and, most importantly, any text on the page. Each of these elements are weighted so if a match is made in a path, for example, then this scores lower than a word found in the main body of the page.
The breakdown of the weighting is as follows;
Page name = 1 point,
Meta data = 2 points,
Page path = 3 points,
Body text = 4 points.

Once the search is done and all of the matches are found the script stack-ranks the results based on a total of these scores. Pages with higher rankings will appear at the top of the search results.

Now it should be possible to skew the results if you load your chosen keywords in high raking areas (like the body text) but obviously to do this well you would need to target specific search terms.

I’ll add your suggestion to our database but sadly at the moment there aren’t any available controls within the Action to allow you to artificially alter the search outcome in favour of preferred pages.

I hope this helps.
Regards,
Tim.
