Sorry…accidentally hit send before typing!
I have a new site and it seems to be loading very slowly, the headers, and rollover graphics in particular. Was wondering if I’ve done something wrong, maybe my file sizes are out of wack, or maybe it’s just my connection. I do have a random image action running on the banner graphic, not sure if that is the problem with the banner. Also any feedback in general about the site would be appreciated (the client wanted the site live ASAP so it is incomplete).
here is the url, http://packconstruction.net
Thanks,
Rich

Yes, it does take a long time to load for me too, though it doesn’t seem to be any specific element of the page that is causing it as they do all, eventually, load at the same time. It could be something to do with the hosting provider - who is hosting the site?

It is hosted by Start Logic, I have a few sites there and most of them seem to be running just fine.

Are the domains with another company? Sometimes I’ve found that to slow things down…

The biggest file to download is the cat-header.png at 168k and 7.02 secs to download all the page at my end.

Any particular reason this is a png - I think you would get a smaller file size from a jpeg

No reason at all that is a .png, I will switch all of those headers to .jpegs to see if that speeds things up.
Thanks,

It is possible to get Safari to show precisely how long each page element is taking to load.
By activating the normally hidden ‘Develop’ menu, you are able to select ‘Show Web Inspector’ and click on the ‘Resources’ tab on the lower pane that appears. Very, very useful.

To activate the Develop menu in Safari, go to the Safari preferences pane, select Advanced > Show Develop menu in menu bar.

The Develop pane also gives access to lots of other goodies that help a little in understanding how CSS, scripts and other resources have been utilised in a page being browsed. And it’s FREE!

The images at the top are very large - I just grabbed one and stuck it through Photoshop and got it down from 303k to 28k…Do you have access to an image editor with ‘save for web’ options?

I’ve got photoshop elements 6.0, later today I will change all of those images into jpegs and shrink the file size.

I think that will help - Though I do think theres a server issue going on also, as where I am now we have a huge connection yet its still slow… anyway good luck

Its not as slow as this site!!

I will change all of those images into jpegs

Remember that if these are not imported as pass-through images then changing the output type in the Inspector to jpeg and adjusting the quality there will do what you need with resorting to Elements.

Thanks for all of the replies. I changed the files to .jpegs and that has seemed to help.
The little tip about the developer tool on Safari has been very useful.
Thanks again,
Rich

From just over 7 secs to just over 1 sec at my end - a very noticeable improvement.
