[Pro] site panel

Hello everyone… I do not know what happened but several things are new in Pro…I am trying to move items in site panel and they will not move, as I am trying to put all items in order and also I am creating a rollover - target /hide image action and it is not working for strange reason(ie: the action dialog does not show all images so I can check them to coordinate with numbers.
the only way it works is if I move items under the target image(slightlyto the right) so it becomes a group but then I can not adjust the boxes… it is maddening. I have made so many of these things
Thanks for anyone who know what is happening

As everyone seems to be away twittering on another thread at the
moment, I’ll just make a couple or so points before the gurus give you
the detail, as I am sure they will.

  1. You need to check whether or not items are layers, as non-layered
items cannot be moved above layered items in the Site Panel (i.e. down
the list movement is restricted). Also, items within containers (DIVs)
need to be pulled to the left if moved out of the container.

  2. Layered rollovers need to be grouped and you can select the states
within each group from the Site Panel. You can press return to select
text or use the appropriate selection in the Item Menu to Modify or
Transform graphics. (It’s often easier to set up initial rollovers on
the pasteboard area either side of the web page and then position them
    on the page later).

  3. If you haven’t already done so, click the cog wheel at the base of
the Site Panel and check that Show Items is selected. Then use the
site panel to select each image in a stack of Target Hide/Show images,
so that you can check/alter numbers, etc.

  4. In the top bar, use the big CSS button (default usually blue) to
toggle between layered (CSS) and table (FW Express style) layouts.

These issues have been covered a number of times in FreewayTalk and
the Softpress Knowledgebase, so if you do a search you may find what
you need to know. I won’t go any further now, but I will watch to see
if you get an informative response from someone with better knowledge
than me. If not, I’ll try to explain further, when I have more time.

Once you get used to FW Pro’s few little nuances, you will find
working with it becomes second nature.

Hope that gives you a starting point to explore further.

Thanks Colin
Thats exactly what happened. After digging in a bit, I found that indeed the items were layers! Ugh!

Thanks again

Not really Ugh! - as long as you are aware that it is layers you are creating then there is no problem. They just behave slightly differently.

Hi Carla

Are you tending to work more with the CSS button off than on? I only ask because you seemed surprised that these items were layers. Is that not the way you planned it.

The biggest thing to remember when using CSS layering is that the viewers text size preference can be your undoing. Always look at your pages at larger/smaller text sizes so that you can see what boxes expand to cover others and vice-versa.

The Box Model that Dan J has provided screencasts for does go a long way to prevent this but a lot of FW users do not find it intuitive (including me) but with a bit of forethought and effort it can make for a much more flexible site.

But I digress.

Thanks for the tip Dave

I never even thought of that CSS being on or off. As still new Pro user… I guess I made mistakes.
So the thing to do every time I start a page is to turn CSS off?

I will do some checking into it

Thanks

Not necessarily - just be aware at the start whether it is on or off because you will need to treat layered items differently. (see previous post)

If it is off to start then you will create a table based site but you have the option to select any item on that page and change it to a layered item in the inspector at any stage of the construction.

If it is on at the start then every item you create will be layered but you can change it to unlayered at any stage (in the inspector)

If you start with it off then at a later stage turn it on - then everything you create after ‘switching on’ will be layered - and vice-versa.

Great will do…
I had no idea about this

Being an Ex Express user you have been sheltered from layers.

It is not that different or difficult, you just have to be aware (as you found out) that behaviours vary.

Anyway you know we are here to help if you get unstuck.
