Even though Freeway Pro automatically adjusts my resource files (ai, psd, etc.) to a web compatible format (jpg, gif, png), is it better to reduce my resource files before I use them in Freeway?
Also is there any benefit to modifying image files outside of Freeway and using the pass through option?
Freeway does a very good job of many types of images, but it does not do a perfect job of all. What I recommend is that you let Freeway do the conversion for you, then evaluate the image in a browser on a case-by-case basis. There will be some that require extra love in Photoshop, and then the Save for Web feature there. Remember, any file you import as pass-through must be in one of the browser-friendly formats, and you won’t be able to crop, rotate, add effects, etc. within Freeway.

You can also do a halfway version of that. If the image is scaled in Freeway, you may find you get a better result if you scale the same amount in Photoshop, make sure the resolution is at 72ppi, and import that as normal rather than passthrough. (I personally find the limitation of passthrough graphics to be more than the benefits, in almost every case.)
