[Pro] Skype and social network links

Is it possible to link directly to a Skype or MSM account directly from a web page? I suppose in a similar way that we currently connect to a social media site (such as Twitter etc.) via a page button.
Any ideas? Would be very useful I think.

You can do this using URL schemes, and as long as your computer has
registered a handler for that scheme, the link will work. You can see
this in action on the Person pages on FreewayTalk. If you click on my
name, you’ll see a link to my Skype account that will (or should) open
Skype on your computer and attempt to call me. This only works on a
computer that has Skype installed, and it will hardly ever work to
actually call me because I don’t leave Skype on.

Here are some url schemes I know:

aim:goim?screenname=yourScreenName
ymsgr:sendIM?yourScreenName
msnim:chat?contact=yourScreenName
xmpp:yourScreenName
skype:yourScreenName?call

Walt,

Many thanks for that – the Skype element works beautifully!

The site I need this for is to operate in China, where QQ (Tencent) is the preferred chat forum. So I need to include the QQ button which would ideally work as smoothly as the Skype one you provided. I have tried scalping code from a Chinese website but this only works on Windows based systems (a browser-based window is launched)- so if you have any knowledge of code for QQ, which works more in the manner of the Skype one – that would be brilliant!

In any event, many thanks for your help.

Nik
