Most of my sites involve clicking or mousing over thumbnails to reveal big photos. I noticed a site recently (actually it was on an iPad app) with a long line of thumbnails across the bottom, extending off each side. When you click on one it centres in the strip, with all the thumbnails moving across. There are also arrows at the ends allowing one to navigate the thumbnails.
You can do something similar with the Carousel or Carousel2 Actions.

No, I don’t think I can Dave! My example comes from an iPad app put out by our local Advertiser newspaper. There is a subset called ‘Gallery’ with (today) 15 photos. When you click on (touch!) a thumbnail it becomes larger, and the photo appears covering most of the screen. There is also a narrow text band across the bottom. The text disappears when the photo is clicked/touched – as a Hide/Show layer. It’s quite neat.
I can do the same thing with Freeway, except for the sliding across of the thumbnails. This means I have to work with separate pages – the Cathedral site I’m working on just now has 66 thumbnails – so 11 pages of six.
This one uses jQuery so is not ideal if you want to use it on a FW page that utilises native FW actions which are based on a different javascript library.
A Google search for thumbnail slideshow will turn up hundreds of possibilities and once you have found something you like then we can help you integrate it into your FW site.
The Google search seems to turn up a number of alternative programs for making slideshows! In fact I can use Freeway now to reproduce the effect, except for the sliding. If I used frames to separate off the thumbnail strip, I could use an arrow at each end to transition from one set to the next. Doing it seamlessly has some attraction though.
If you dont actually need the slideshow feature - just the ability to have a strip of thumbnails that when clicked show a larger version - then it can be all done within FW.
Thanks Dave. Let me think about this a bit. If I decide to use it, I’ll get back to you on how to incorporate it in one of my sites. Having the thumbnails across the bottom allows one to use most of the screen for the big picture, which is desirable, but on the other hand many of my photos are ‘vertical’, so the benefit would be lost. But in any case, it is good to explore the possibilities.
With thanks, Paul
