[Pro] Smooth scroll on freeway 6

Does anyone tried the smooth scroll action on freeway 6?
I have a problem that links from a CSS menu get ״confused" which means that even links that are not linked to any anchor points and not linked at all behave like they do and go to anchor points on the page. When I remove the smooth scroll action from the page, everything works great. Is there another method to get the same effect of smooth scroll by adding a code or something to solve the problem?

Can you post a link to a page which shows this issue? SmoothScroll should only attach its behavior to links which are anchor links to an actual element on the page. If that’s not the behavior you are seeing, then please show me an example.

Thanks,

Walter

I was wondering if this problem was solved and how?

I also noticed that some links activate the smooth scroll to a point on my page. Even if these links, just like Hanah’s, are not linked to anything yet. For example, I have a CSS menu, but some are not linked yet or you are already on the page. If you click these, the smooth scroll will slide the page down to a point. I noticed that the smooth scroll does scroll down the page untill it reaches the link text.

Can you post an example? I have not been able to duplicate this here.

Hi waltd,

I’ve uploaded a basic sample: http://members.home.nl/frans.u2/index.html

You noticed that when you click on the ‘Test CSS menu’, the page scrolls. I haven’t put any anchors on the site.

That’s odd, but I doubt it will be a problem in production, since you will link to actual pages then. There shouldn’t be any options in your menu that are not actual links to specific pages or anchors within the page. Remember, if you have a top-level “category” link with a half-dozen “subcategory” links below it, that top-level option should not be an empty # anchor link – it needs to go to an actual page, with a duplicate of the subcategory links on it at the very least, and a description of each of those links under each one if you want to be serious about SEO.

Thanks for your reply. Sometimes I do not link the category because there’s no page for it. But I did found something that will solve the problem. I turned the mark this page option off and instead of sliding down it just reloaded the page because I was already on it. So I think that the solution!

I’ve updated the example, one link turned on and one link turned off. The one that’s turned off will not slide and reload the page.

Thanks for the great support waltd!

The issue appears to be that the test for “does this element exist” isn’t strong enough. An empty document.getElementById() seems to match something on the page, and the anchor tries to move to it. I’m not sure why it’s attracted to the element you just clicked, but I will add another test to the Action for the length of the anchor text. It must be 1 character or more, not nothing.

It works, it does not slide anymore. Even if you do not link it to anything. Thank a lot!

But I noticed that when you click a link and it starts scrolling, you click it again while it’s still scrolling, it tries to restart the scroll. So the page starts going up and down a bit. I can’t remember if it was on the older version. Just so you know.

That sounds normal for ScrollTo in Scriptaculous. Thanks for reporting it. Whenever I rewrite this Action, I’ll take another look at that, and implement a global lock so the scroll only happens once.

Hi,

I have still this problem; sliding to the top if you click an item in the css menu. I’m using the latest version. It is not a problem, because I will use the complete menu/submenus.

But I have an other problem: going to the “Anchors” on the same “page” all works fine (offset 250px) but if I go to an Anchor on an other “page” it wil not “jump” in place, unless you hit the link again. I hope you can help me,

Thanks, Lode

Can you give me directions to a link on the page you posted that goes to an anchor on another page? I’m limited in languages by my American education. (English - esp. Elizabethan, menu Spanish, various polite things in Polish)

Hi Walt,

Sure, if you open the site and then go to the link: “Forum” you will see the “non effect”, click again and that is what I want.
(BTW, the site is Flemish)

Thanks, Lode

Remember that you will not get the benefit of the feature ‘Highlight Current Page’ (mark this page) unless you have the page as a top level link in your menu.

I’m afraid that isn’t going to work on your layout. I can see why you want it, but the anchor behavior on page load is too soon for this Action to hijack it and make it behave the way you want it to.

I have done this on another site (hand coded) and I may find the time to roll this into the Action, but at the moment, you’ll need to create an anchor that is “header height pixels” vertically offset from the actual spot on your page where you want the browser to appear. You won’t get the smooth scroll on page load, but you won’t get what actually happens (the Disqus content appears to be the actual focus of the link).

I was so pleased with this new version “SmoothScroll/Offset” possibility.
I used the Anchors the way you explained before and they did not work so good in FireFox. Pity.

Has anyone used the Smooth scroll action with Exhibeo or Wow Slider or Fading Slideshow and had success. I can get the page to scroll to the anchors but the smooth park goes away.

Can you show a link to the page where it’s failing?
