[Pro] Social Media Icons?

One of my clients asked me today if they really need to be involved with a lot of different social media sites. Currently, they’re big Facebook users, but that’s about it.

What are your thoughts on this subject?

Don’t do it if you’re not really going to do it.

IOW, if you’re not going to continually spend some effort being active on them, interacting with customers or potential ones, don’t bother.

Also, don’t be like this.

I agree with Joe. Personally I’m no great fan of social media, though Twitter has become the new RSS for me in many respects. I also find Twitter to be a more professional outlet compared to Facebook, generally speaking. There’s no denying these outlets can wield tremendous power if, as Joe said, you put the time in to use it to your advantage. Otherwise it’s dead weight.

I’m no big fan of how masses of social media icons slow page load times -
though I am a fan of using social media judiciously and effectively.
