[Pro] Softpress site

Is it just me or does anyone else feel the new Softpress web site is a step (or two) backwards? I find it very uninspiring, hard to find the useful old links of old, and moulded in the cookie-cutter ‘blogoshphere’ look of so much html5 stuff.

I thought one of the selling points of Freeway was it’s creative facility - and yet the site looks bland and indifferent to me - big fonts, spacey, what should be headline navigation hidden within text…hmmm.

Personally I just find it pandering to a ‘flavour of the month’ popularism. I feel and wish it would forge its own distinct style…and bring back the better navigation of old.

Maybe I got out of bed the wrong side…

Lol! It’s fair game, I suppose. Personally I think it’s a bit sterile - I’d
like to see more “edge”, more appeal to the professional creative
community.

Maybe we should have an informal design contest - not for prizes or that,
but just a friendly competition to let our hair down and show off a bit by
giving those old maids over at Softpress a makeover

Anyone interested?

Ernie, that sounds like fun! If I have the time, you can count me in!

It’s not a bad idea! Even a single ‘home page’ could get quite a lot across in terms of appearance, structure, navigation, creativity. Hmmmm…

Uahhh - I’m a bad and uninspired designer cause I haven’t got that big problems with that page.

I basically love big typo, sections and modules and the way of “less is sometimes more”. But I am always interested in a small competition - so show me what you’ve got.

Cheers

Thomas

Nope. The current Softpress website is creative and well designed. I like the big fonts too. But that doesn’t mean we couldn’t have a bit of fun with it!

Long ago, when the Web Standards Project was in its infancy, there was a fabulous site called the CSS Zen Garden. A single page of HTML, with a single CSS file (plus images), and anyone could submit their own version of the CSS and images (but not change the HTML) to provide a new look.

The idea was to dramatically demonstrate that the content didn’t need to change in order to make the page look radically different. It’s still alive today: http://www.csszengarden.com and I encourage you to look at it for inspiration.

But maybe we need a Freeway Zen Garden, with a single page (maybe the Softpress home page, maybe something else more generic) and the challenge is to redesign the page without changing any of the content. Everyone starts with the same content, and gets to present it however they like. Thoughts?

Thanks for the link Walter, it’s absolutely amazing what can be done with CSS.

Personally, I think the Freeway Pro product page would be really fun to redesign. However, I’m not sure about the “without changing any of the content” part, because of how different layouts require changes in content to work well.

I guess what I was thinking of is just “Redesign a pre-defined page of the Softpress website as if it was your job in the first place”.

With that said, I’d be up for it either way. Not being able to change content would make it much more challenging.
