[Pro] start from scratch or Template

I know this has been discussed many times. I’m new to Freeway (any version) and starting with the latest Pro version to build some websites for myself and friends. I publish to a hosting service I’ve used for years (happily). I live in the OSX world and used to make sites in GoLive/DW, don’t code, and now I’m moving to Freeway after many recommendations.

My first Freeway site will be a photography gallery type site.
I’ve watched all the tutorials and read some user pages. I’m ready to go, but slick looking templates are tempting.

Do people recommend buying a template? If so, I’ve seen them with jquery and html5, or flash options. Which would be the easiest for me to make changes to/customize in Freeway?

Open to feedback - thanks for reading

Freeway is not an html editor so 3rd party templates won’t work in Freeway that would have worked in Golive or Dreamweaver. There are some templates that Freeway comes with, but nothing particularly exciting. There are “Actions” included, and some 3rd party developed Actions such as those that Walt have provided that make adding Javascript libraries and CSS simpler. Freeway comes with some effects built-in based on Prototype libraries, but there are certainly many more out there that are not. The trick will be learning how and where to insert the extra bits to get the effects you want to use. Not difficult to learn necessarily.

I think DanJ has some templates on his site at danjasker.com - might be worth a look.

DW is a nightmare for designers and here is where Freeway steps up,
is the perfect tool to be creative. Most templates on sale won’t work
in FW. To get the best out of this great app. we must see it as part
of our web design creative pack. Photoshop, Intaglio, Easy Web
Animator and Freeway are a killing combination. I use PS to create
backgrounds, buttons (even for rollovers) text, and of course nice
templates, Intaglio is nice for creating logos and buttons, Easy Web
Animator flash app. is so simple you won’t believe what you can do,
and Freeway is the melting pot where all comes to life. Get your
hands in all the actions you can get (most free) at actionsforge.com,
and you are ready for the big leagues. As an example a new client has
a dynamic site build in DW, PHP, Flash, SQL and the designer quit and
left with the backup, we where able to reproduce and exact dynamic
copy in Freeway. As I do, you will love this app.

Great feedback.

I have checked out some of the templates at danjasker and was impressed. I’ll check out East Web Animator and Intalgio.
As for rollovers and things in PS, I was hoping to to able to use the graphic text boxes in freeway to try and ‘stay in one app’ but I certainly know the benefits of creating some solid buttons and the logo in PS. Just didn’t want to do the back and forth thing. I like the button actions in Freeway.

In GL I used menu machine for a long time to create some nice looking dynamic drop down, nav bars, what I think Freeway calls “breadcrumbs.” Is that right? This feature is built in? That will be great.

Freeway comes with the CSS Menus Action, which can do all manner of
dynamic drop-down menus. I haven’t used Menu Machine before, is that a
plug-in for GL, or a stand-alone CSS/JavaScript generator? Breadcrumbs
are the little waypoint navigation links, like you might see in a
deeply-nested site structure like Yahoo.com or similar:

home > products > widgets > cogs

Got it. Thanks. I’ll use CSS Menu actions. Menu Machine was a stand alone javascript generator made just for GL.
