[Pro] Surround sound

Hi all, very off-topic this one. Does anyone know of a low-cost solution of upmixing a stereo track to 5.1 dts surround?

I know of a couple of freebies/shareware for pc but not for Mac.

thanks in advance.

Hi Trev,

It isn’t something I’ve done in the past but this was the first hit on Google, searching for “stereo to 5.1 mac”:

Thanks for that Joe, but it’s not quite what I’m after.

I have some stereo source files which a client has asked me if I know
how to upmix them to 5.1 surround sound to be played in a standalone
DVD recorder and surround sound speakers for a presentation. So it’s
not how to play them on my Mac, it’s how to encode the files to be
written to DVD/CD.

thanks.

Funnily enough, just reading that now, but I think the price might be
a bit high for the client and a one-off job.

Taken me ages to see the 2 things mentioned using Yahoo to search…
that’ll teach me!

Thanks again Joe.

Yikes. That is a stiff price. Have you looked at Logic Express from
Apple? That’s about $200, and is a full-fledged mixing studio in a
box. One thing I will say about it is this – it expects that you
understand the inner workings of a mixing board and have a working
knowledge of sound mixing. I own it, and have used it extensively for
live recording and minor studio work, but I have probably plumbed
about one tenth of what it can do.

Perhaps what you’re paying for with the other app is one-click-easy.
You might just want to look around for a gigging musician who owns one
or another of the DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) applications like
Logic and ask them to do it for you. Maybe put something in their tip
jar in exchange.

I found this free software, although I can’t vouch for it’s usability.

This would be the software platform - Audio Editing Software. Sound, Music, Voice & MP3 Editor. Best Audio Editor for 2023.

This would be the converter plugin to use with above (also free): http://stevethomson.ca/vi/

Chuckamuck, that looks just the ticket, and at an affordable price.

Thanks very much, I’ll probably get it tomorrow and report back as the
week goes on.

Hi Chuckamuck, just to report back. Wavepad seems fine but the plugin
is pc only so still not sorted.

I use Amadeus for my general sound editing (great programme, by the
way, for the price) and I’m now looking at VST plugins for that).

Thanks for the pointers though.
